Will my iphone work?

Postby thedon29 » Fri Mar 02, 2012 11:27 am

Hi everyone, just a quick question. I bought an iphone last year from the internet, and to be fair, it did say it was locked to a Uk operator, but I did manage to unlock it to work over here, no probs. The thing is, Im going to the Uk soon and need to know will it work over there because it was locked? Someone told me if it was found/stolen and sold on, and I used it over there, they could trace me?!! I dont really need that kind of hassel, lol.

Anyone got a clue?

Looking forward to your comments!

I'm sure if you have inadvertently purchased a stolen phone you would like it returned to its rightful owner and to be able to help the police with their enquiries....?

iPhones in UK are normally locked to he operator's network. They can usually be officially unlocked after the contract has expired.

If the phone was stolen it is probably black listed in UK and will no longer work on UK networks. It is unlikely to be traced if it is not working.

If it is legitimate and has been unlocked either 'officially' or jail broken it will work fine and not be a problem. Apart from roaming data costs of course.

I have used a jail broken iPhone which was locked to one UK network on another UK network for over a year with no problems. It also worked fine roaming with data turned off in Greece. I used wifi in internet cafes for email.
I haven't taken it to Cyprus.

So, it should be ok.

If it was stolen and it was reported then you will be traced. A friend of mine some years ago was sold a stolen mobile (without him knowing) and some days after the police knocked on his door. Of course if you use the equivalent of "so-easy" then there will be no name or address associated with the SIM hard... I hope you didn't buy the phone if you knew it was stolen!!!
