According to CNA, the paper Havadis is reporting Illegal Settlers leaving the Occupied Areas for a better life in Turkey.

This is how CNA reports the matter...

Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (29.02.12) publishes a 3-page feature reporting that the Turkish workers living inside the walls of the occupied part of Lefkosia begun to return back to Turkey. The number of students from Turkey also has decreased in the schools in the area. The paper reports that the hostels are closed; the houses are empty and even the grocery owners confirmed that the number of people in the area has been decreased.

According to the paper, the reasons that the Turkish workers prefer to return back to Turkey are the recession at the construction sector, as well as that many companies have been closed down. In addition to this, the minimum wage in Turkey is higher than in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus, and the living cost in the occupied area is much higher than Turkey.

Reasons for the exodus are given as lack of work due to collapse of construction sector, high cost of living and low wages with the minimum wage being higher in Turkey.

It's a tricky one that,

On the one hand you have the TCs moaning about the embargoes.

On the other hand you have the Turkish carpetbaggers looking for a better life.

...very telling, many settlers leaving, those that stay can either draw closer to those who love this island while they watch "them" leave, or they can continue to hope for Turkey's attention, on an island that prospers, without this claim.

Large majority must have by now realised that they are not going to become EU citizens in any settlement (since the AP will not be coming back from the dead), so that they can roam into the EU for better life than the one they have in the north under military rule, so they are opting for their second "best" choice, to go back to Turkey.

So much for VP's claim that they are to be the "new TCs". Turks in general are not too crazy about TCs. They see us as uneducated, uncultured and non believers bunch of country pumpkins, and when they see VP and Kuntish everyday in the north, it further re-enforces that belief for them.
