Yes we need the rain,
having our dams full is great ... but I honestly got tired of this weather!!
At least it was sunny on Sunday for the Carnival!
The following years, drought is in the horizon again, draining the dams in combination with high evaporation rates kicking in due to the arid hot climate of the island. According to some studies, 1/3 of the dam waters will evaporate in the next 4 years. Other studies found that appox 82% of the dam water is lost due to seepage, evaporation, leaky water mains and inefficient watering systems by our farmers and home owners (sprinkler systems).
The solution found to be the installation of 4 desalination plants with more on the drawing board... a really short sided approach by the ROC. Desalination is expensive, high maintenance with a high CO2 footprint. According to calculations, it takes 3 litres of gasoline to desalinate 1 cubic meter of water! The downside to desalination is the high cost of the fresh water produced which is not suitable for crop irrigation. Therefor, the ROC commits 67% of the dam water to farmers which obviously is subsidized at 75%.
Addressing the evaporation issue is key to less water going into this air. I am working on some ideas (floating media) with 67% efficiency and would like to hear any of your ideas.
