SYRIA MOVEMENT: U.S. President Barack Obama called Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Monday to discuss the terms of a ceasefire to take effect in Syria, the White House said, cautioning that the road ahead would not be easy. “This is a moment of opportunity and we are hopeful that all the parties will capitalize on it,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters as he revealed the call between the two leaders. The U.S. side is supposed to work with the opposition, Russia’s role is to influence the regime. Putin said on Russian TV in the evening Syria could be “radically changed” after the agreement with the U.S. Bashar al-Assad surprisingly announced Monday that parliamentary elections are to be held on April 13, state news agency SANA reported, shortly after Washington and Moscow announced the ceasefire plan. Assad issued a decree which included seat allocations for each of the provinces in Syria, which last held parliamentary elections in May 2012.

In the following interview (in Turkish), Turkish international relations expert Dr. Ahmet Kasım Han makes a highly critical assessment of where the current Turkish regime’s Syria policy has taken the country:

I thought that this analysis was very insightful, so I decided to make a translation of it and post it on my website here:

I thought this might be of interest to people here who are following developments in Syria.

Turkey has been a huge spoiler and if things go bad in the future, it will be difficult for them because they are going to get the blame for many things.

Who told you there will be no Air Cover? By geez Kikapu, Turkey would be able to maintain Air Superiority and control the skies over Syria easily. The Russians only have 2 bases they fly from. Turkey can send planes from anywhere, even Jordan if it wanted to.

Then of course, add the Saudis into the mix. Pootin will not find it easy at all, and will probably find himself in the shit!

Then I don't know why Turkey and the Saudis haven't already declared victory in Syria long long time ago if your assessment is correct?

The moment Turkey and Saudis attack the Russian forces in Syria, then Turkey and Saudi Arabia will also become targets deep in their countries to Russian ballistic missiles from Greater Russia. Once again, NATO won't be able to help Turkey at all. If Turkey want's to start a fight with the Russians on their own with the Saudis, then they will need to also defend themselves on their own.

As for TAF, they will be picked off 5 at a time with the Russian S300/S400's over Syria. Does Turkey want to bet it all just to try to get rid of Assad? Really? Then again, Erdogan is quite mad, so anything is possible, which will be music to the ears of the USA, EU, Russia, Kurds and Armenia to see the break-up of Turkey.

Do you really think so.

Whoah Kikapu, a Ballistic Missile attack on Turkey is the stuff Article 5 is meant for.

I don't think so Kikapu. Try again!

Pootin can never attack Turkey or Greece, or Italy or any other member of NATO unless of course they want the USA to attack Mother Russia with Ballistic Missiles.

That's WW3!

Do you wonder why NATO pulled out their Patriot missiles out of Turkey last year which were based along the Syria/Turkey border?

Maybe because NATO didn't want to be forced into defending Turkey from the Russians if and when Erdogan went crazier than he already is.

Forget about Article 5 if Turkey want's to play Rambo with Russia on her own.

No I don't wonder about that at all. Patriots are only a very minor part, and they have their faults and are not needed. The media beat the Patriot up quite a bit like the S400.

Most countries don't even buy Patriot - Australia and Canada among them. Do you ever wonder why that is so?

Article 5 is very real and I am sure Pootin will not be forgetting about it at all. And I don't think Turkey will be playing on its own. It will drag Saudi Arabia, QATAR, UAE and Jordan with it and I am sorry but that is something NATO or the USA can't ignore. Article 5 is very much alive and kicking.

Well, this article should answer Paphiti's question on Nato's Article 5 regarding Turkey vs Russia.

Turkish deputy PM chides ‘tiny’ Luxembourg after NATO comments

Luxembourg is a tiny country that does not even possess an army, said Deputy Prime Minister Tuğrul Türkeş, in response to the country's foreign minister, Jean Asselborn, who suggested that NATO would not defend Turkey in the event of a military conflict with Russia.
Speaking at a Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Keçiören district meeting on Wednesday, Türkeş criticized Asselborn's comments on Ankara's feud with Moscow, after Turkey downed a Russian jet on Nov. 24 on the Syrian border.

Referring to Luxembourg, Türkeş said, “You are a tiny country in the middle of Europe; you don't even have an army. You [Luxembourg] have no understanding of those [military] issues,” he said. “For 60 years NATO has been boasting [about its military strength] on the back of Turkish soldiers and the Turkish Armed Forces.”

The downing of the jet sparked a crisis between Turkey and Russia, prompting Moscow to deploy its cutting-edge air defense systems, S-400s, to an air base near Latakia in Syria, very close to the Turkish border. Russia warned that it will respond to any threat to its aircraft, and Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the country's commanders to act swiftly if Turkish jets violate Syrian air space.
In remarks last week, Asselborn was quoted by Der Spiegel as saying that NATO "cannot allow itself to be pulled into a military escalation with Russia as a result of the recent tensions between Russia and Turkey."

He suggested that the alliance's collective defense clause, Article 5, which states that an armed attack against one member is considered as an attack on the entire alliance, will not apply in the case of a Russian-Turkish military confrontation because "the guarantee is only valid when a member state is clearly attacked."

Continuing his tirade against Luxembourg, Türkeş said: “Our [Turkey's] airs pace, our soil is also the air space and soil of a NATO member country. It is not possible to say, ‘Let anyone who wishes, to pass or fly through.'”

"Lately, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has launched a major counter-offensive which aims to reopen the supply line from central Syria (Hama) to Aleppo city. By capturing Khanasser (Khanasir) and a few other villages, government forces have reduced the ISIS-held road to just 4 miles; just yesterday, it was 7 miles. According to a military source close to al-Masdar, the SAA intends to recapture the road entirely within the next 48 hours to come."
