Euro parliament calls for return of Varosha
Published on February 15, 2012
THE EUROPEAN Parliament yesterday adopted a common position on the fenced off area of Famagusta, calling on Turkey to return Varosha to its lawful inhabitants.
Speaking to the state broadcaster last night, AKEL MEP Kyriacos Triantaphyllides described the development as “very significant”.
“It’s an issue that all Cypriot MEPs worked hard on with the help of colleagues,” he said.
Trantaphyllides explained the required number of signatures among MEPs were collected, making the written statement calling on Turkey to help towards returning the fenced off part of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants an official position of the European Parliament.
“This statement will be passed on to the UN Secretary-General and all governments so all will know what the position of the European Parliament is,” he said.
The AKEL MEP noted that in the past there was some debate as to what the Strasbourg Parliament’s position was exactly.
“With this written statement, no one can say the European Parliament position is anything other than what the statement says, that the fenced off part of Famagusta should be returned to its lawful inhabitants,” he said.
