I am more in inclined to the notion the roc was given the green light to join the EU, not because greece wanted it and threaten, as we all know greece's insignifigance in world affairs is at the bare min and please spare me the rheotoric, but as an EU insurance on the turks...the eu never wanted the turks, but the turks got a date to satisfy the US...

OR does anyone here think the powers to be consulted greece on any turkish plans?...greece wanted to get the turks in, not because of cyprus but to sort their own problems with getting just about daily gang raped by the turkish airforce...

Not taking away roc's readyness in meeting the challenges of the then future...if anything it rose to the challenge expodentially...

apart from the ovious above no doubt a plus for the eu bagging the roc...owing the mediterranean and keeping the turks out...a win win situation...it had nothing to do with the greeks threatening...or what the greeks wanted...

Cyprus met the chapters legitimately, where as Greece ... well let me put it this way, today Greece would stand as much chance of joining the EU as Turkey.

In common with any other applicants to join the EU there is an Accession Process with dozens of hoops to jump through in the form of subject Chapters that have to be met.

Many will have seen the rubbish annual appraisals of the rubbish Turkish Application to join the EU with the Chapters that Turkey is having soooo much trouble meeting.

This is a link to one of the annual appraisals of CY's application, the one for 2001 ...

It's a huge doc ... its 's an account of how CY was working with the Commission to close Chapters, to meet the required standards in each.... oh and there is no mention of any help from Greece in it.
