What I would like to know is why did the GC leaders first accept Marash and six other places when it was offered in 1986 and a week later refused. Can anybody help?

If I remember correctly the TCs insisted that GCs would have to pass through a "trnc" checkpoint before they could enter the town.
the GCs were offered Marash with no preconditions

That is understandable considering the time. If a GC wanted to enter a TC village that he would have to pass through a TC checkpoint. But no GC had to go through a TC checkpoint to go into a GC village. Where as all TCs had to go through GC checkpoints to go to any TC village or Nicosia.
The two are not the same.
But going back to the refusal of Marash. The reference is not to the agreement in 1986. It is refering to the actual negotiations for the 1986 and the proposal which were refused, the GCs were offered Marash with no preconditions just to attend the negotiations. The GC leadership accepted in New York and returned to Cyprus only to refuse the offer 7 days later after short conversation with the Russian Embasy.
The question remains, why was it refused?
