Cyprus: Home of Human Rights!

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Cyprus: Home of Human Rights!

Postby Hermes » Fri Jan 27, 2012 3:56 pm

The Republic of Cyprus is amongst the freest, most democratic nations in the world with a high commitment to human rights according to the latest ECHR report. If only we could say the same for Turkey which has the worst record in Europe...

ECHR: Low conviction rate for Cyprus

Cyprus, along with Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Belgium, San Marino and the Czech Republic, ranks low in the list of countries found guilty of human rights violations by the European Court of Human Rights. Cyprus features in the last places among the 47 member-states of the Council of Europe which have been convicted by the European Court for at least one human right violation.

Turkey tops the bill with 159 convictions in as many cases, followed by Russia with 121, Ukraine with 105 and Greece with 69. Romania with 58 and Poland complete the first six spots of the ECHR statistics for 2011. The statistics as well as the Court's activities for 2011 were presented by the ECHR President Nicolas Bratza.

''Human rights, the rule of law and justice seem to be slipping down the political agenda in the current economic climate. It is in times like these that we must remember that human rights are not a luxury and that the burden of their protection must be a shared one,'' said Bratza. He added ''we must continue to ensure that the Court remains strong, independent and courageous in its defence of the European Convention on Human Rights.''

Also, why no positive comments from the TCs on this forum to the ROC's outstanding human rights record? Some congratulations are surely in order...

So if we had such a poor Human Rights record in the 60s (according to Bananiot) that the TCs deserved their own territory, and now the RoC has been identified as having one of the more excellent HR profiles (whilst the TCs continue to perform in a disgusting HR manner) - then we can take this as yet more proof of who the real criminals in the prelude to this miss really were/are.
