Gosh .... soooo impressive. When CY rivers flow, they really do flow.

It is the B6 - the old Limassol to Paphos road.

This is a link to a page on the Republic's Water Development Department site.... http://www.moa.gov.cy/moa/wdd/wdd.nsf/r ... enDocument

Gives a picture of a good deal of variance in the state of the CY dams. Asprokremnos and two or three others are filled and overflowing, others however are well below capacity. Kouris for instance, which is by far the largest dam on CY is at less than 60% capacity.

1) At the current rate of flow Kouris should top 60% by tomorrow: it is filling at the fatest rate in absolute terms which is at about 1,6% per day in relative terms

2) The rate of inflow and thus level othewise depends on where the rain falls in relation to catchment areas - if more falls on the west of the Island then the Pafos dams are likely to fill faster and that is quite likely due to orographic uplift as warm moist air rises as it hits the hills behind Pafos and starts to Dump its load. The east side however will tend to lie in what is known as the rain-shadow .

Here however is to more rain - may all our dams be full and our aquifiers replenished.

Erm ... common sense reh bill c. If they are bigger, they take longer to fill up, no? :)

Global warming has finally arrived to Cyprus!

Turkey can cancel her water pipes to Cyprus. Her water will not be needed. :D

Oh.. yes ... undeniably good point, but two of the smaller dams, at Kalopanayiotis and at Lefkara (have fished both of these by the way) are at 0% (!) and 34%.

Driest year
06 April 2014 09:11

http://incyprus.philenews.com/en-gb/Blo ... riest-year

The lowest ebb, until now, was more than ten years ago, in the year 1990-1991 when dam water capacity was at 12 million cubic metres (mcm).
The Water Development Department (WDD) said that the period from October 2013 to September 2014 will be the worst of all time since it is expected that water levels will not significantly change and increase before October.

...for the record.

Overall, the dams of the Republic are currently at 48.5% of capacity... same day last year the corresponding figure was 87.5% full.

The biggest, Kouris, is at 41.2 % capacity, Asprokremnos at 79.7%.

Looks like only Kalopanagiotis will overflow this year... :(
