Health food/special diet shops

Postby puffik » Sat Jan 21, 2012 10:58 pm

One of my girlies may need to go on a Gluten Free,/Caesin (effectively Dairy) Free,/Soya Free diet. That means in particular looking for dairy free alternatives to milk, cheeses, etc.

Finding gluten Free products is not a problem: it is the Caesin free (ie non dairy) aspect that we are having trouble with. (We Know about Rice milk but there are other items we are looking for ) Does any one know of any good health food shops likely to carry in particular Caesin free products, such as the powdered non-dairy milk substitutes, or cheese substitutes ?

We live in Lim (and are looking at the health food shops here ) but travel to Larnaca (which we do for schooling every day )or Lefkosia is not a problem.

Thanks

Hello,

I used to be a Vegan and now i am a Vegetarian. The Alpha-Mega supermarkets have great variety of non-dairy milk. I personally prefer hazelnut milk. They also have soy ham, soy nuggets and soy sausages which i find really delicious! There you can also find Soy and Wheat cheese which is very nice tasting.

In addition there is a store in Nicosia in Ledras Street called Holland & Barrett. They have vitamins for vegans and vegetarians and also some foods. You can ask the people there, they are very friendly.

If you need anything else don't hesitate to PM me.!

If there was such a thing as “health food” then a small group of people who consume it would’ve excelled in athletics, intelligence, and longevity but it simply hasn’t happened.

Just had a nice healthy meal, sausages, fried bread, fried eggs, and baked beans. Unfortunately I didn't have any black pudding.

One of GB's Greatest Culinary Contributions ... lovely stuff, all crisp on the outside and soft and oily on the inside.

These so called “Health food” stores should be closed down and their owners arrested and incarcerated for conning the naïve into believing that their overpriced junk extends life, improves one’s athleticism, and/or makes them more clever!

On the other hand, if these “health foods” are NOT offering an extended life, improved athleticism, and/or superior intelligence, then they should cease to use the term “health food” altogether as it offers no advantages whatsoever to other food and is therefore false advertising!

Sustenance is sustenance whether it’s a ground worm or chips at McDonalds… it doesn’t matter because the only things that do matter are (1) quantity and (2) variety.

(1) If you eat too much of ANYTHING you’ll gain unnecessary weight and if you eat too little you’ll obviously be losing weight.

(2) If you don’t eat balanced meals (lack of variety) you’ll suffer from one or more of the many deficiencies that can affect your body. Take note vegetarians because man is an omnivore.

It’s also important to note that despite the hundreds of unique cuisines from around the world, not one race can boast that they have a superior health or longevity as a result of a superior "healthy" cuisine.

And that’s your 5 minute dietary advice from unkie GR!

Contrary to what you are implying; one can live on a 'plant only' derived diet, but one can't live on an 'animal only' diet. Ultimately, plants are at the base of the food chain because they can synthesize certain nutrients which animals can not. So you can get all your requirements from a plant-only diet, or from an omnivorous diet - but not a purely carnivorous diet - even lions eat the stomach of herbivores to get at the plant matter.

There, your education is now complete. :D
