NATO - The North 'American' Treaty Organisation is primarily for the defence of US capitalist interests. Turkey's activities are incongruous; it seems to want to join every club going - bit like you!

NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

It encompasses North America from Alaska to most of Europe including Cyprus by default due to the presence of the Brits.

It also encompasses the ANZUS Treaty as ANZUS own the Echelon Network (which have a base in Cyprus) and are associates of NATO.

And its primary focus is security and Defence of the European continent. It was created from the ashes of WW2 because of Hitler's reign of terror, requiring a Defense apparatus which brings most European nations together to stop such a thing ever hapenning again.
