There's no point teaching a non-native speaker Greek unless they are living in Greece - it has to be Cypriot if they are going to get the best out of living in Cyprus.
What do you know? Do you think people are going to spend their whole time conversing with peasants (like me ) in fields?
I can only assume from what you say that
a) you have never been to Greece or,
b) if you have been to Greece, you never had to adapt your language significantly so that they can actually understand what you are saying.
Don't 'assume' anything because you are too confused already.
How are non-native speakers going to read Greek written in newspapers etc if they are only taught a dialect?
