There's no point teaching a non-native speaker Greek unless they are living in Greece - it has to be Cypriot if they are going to get the best out of living in Cyprus.

What do you know? Do you think people are going to spend their whole time conversing with peasants (like me :D ) in fields?

I can only assume from what you say that

a) you have never been to Greece or,
b) if you have been to Greece, you never had to adapt your language significantly so that they can actually understand what you are saying.

Don't 'assume' anything because you are too confused already. :D

How are non-native speakers going to read Greek written in newspapers etc if they are only taught a dialect?

Now you are confused, because Cypriots are taught to read Greek and speak in a Cypriot dialect.

For example, in these classes, should the non-native speaker be taught that dog is pronounced shilo (Cyprus), or skilo (Greece)?

Cypriots are NOT taught to speak in a Cypriot dialect but they learn that by osmosis. They are only taught how to read and write in Greek. And being taught Greek is what will be the most generally useful for a non-native to learn - since most media are based on Greek. When they converse, they can pick up the various dialects, depending on where they live, because there isn't just one dialect on Cyprus. People from my village, if speaking as they did before mass-TV, would not be understood easily by someone from other parts of Cyprus.

And that's shilaron to you! :D

It is obvious that "Greek" should no longer be an official language. It is useless for us since we speak another tongue but more importantly, Greek is useless and Cypriots need to adopt French and German instead. The benefits of this would be enormous. :)

I mean why would you teach your kids Greek for heaven sakes and not French, German and/or Japaneses? :?
