A few days before the crucial stage in the talks, the Greentree meeting, the UN Mediator Mr Downer has seen fit to publish an open letter defending Turkey's move away from secularism and towards Islam under the AKP and condemning what he sees as anti-Turkey feelings in the West as some kind of Islamophobia.

The letter is entitled Letter from Cyprus: Turkey not anti–west and is dated January, 2012. The original is reported to have appeared in the Adelaide Preview.

I hope Downer's letter is a "pat on the back" for Turkey for what he sees as good in that country (if there actually is). Perhaps the omission of Turkey's human rights record is deliberate.

Will he say at Greentree "you really are nice people except for your human rights record - especially in Cyprus"

Surely he can't be so thick as not to realise what Turkey has in Cyprus is against international HR legislation - or can he?

Downer has the ability to do more damage than the Turkish speaking Cypriots have in the past 35 years. I think he has taken the Cypriot criticism personal and he cannot separate job from personal. He is also unwilling to look at the facts.

Minority group misbehaving badly no one recognises their ilegitimate regime
Turkey violates and has done so for 37 years the human rights of Cypriot people
Turkey violates the sovereignty of not only an Island State but an EU State
Turkey is assimilating the Turkish speaking Cypriot community into mainstream Turkish through the consistent illegal approach to change the demographics in the occupied area of Cyprus
