Why no mention of Turkey's occupation of Cyprus, from this other turkophile?

No surprise there. Juan Cole has NEVER stated anything negative of the Ankara regime. For Juan Cole, Turkey can do no wrong.

1. Any presidential primary is rife with some wing-nuts trying to play to the "base." These folks are not geared quite the same as the average American...as it were. This kind of statement is the political equivalent to crushing a can of beer on his forehead. It's designed to make him look more hardcore than his half-witted competitors that are crushing metaphorical beer cans on their foreheads too.

2. Once the primary is over and it's time for the lucky wankers to actually run for office, they run away from the fringes like Forrest Gump.

3. Does anybody really think that Perry gives a toss about the plight of women in Turkey while he refuses clemency for some potentially innocent black guy (or woman, or retarded guy that got framed, etc, etc) on death row?

True but it was unimaginable just a few years ago for a presidential candidate to utter such words.

If you watched this particular debate in its entirety you would see that it was heated and a lot of the candidates were questioning each others statements. Well, not a single candidate nor any of the moderators questioned Rick Perry's remarks on Turkey. That was noteworthy as well. And of course there was the applause from the audience.

The fact is things are changing and Turkey is no longer perceived by many (and not just in the republican party) as being a reliable ally.

...that's not the debate, it's "the Young Turks".

...the vitriol continues, and the only point this commentator harps on is the flotilla where Israel killed Turkish so called civilians, dismissing the 1000+% increase in honour killings of women. he never addresses any of the other points in the (as he says) loaded question.

reading comments under the many articles that have been published in the USA on the issue, i am grateful for free speech, some are so hate filled, they reveal a great deal about "Turkish" pride. i think they are real eye-openers. Turkey may be a great ally, but Erdogan and his ilk are not.

This vid by Cenk Uygur plays to an audience that is to the left of Obama and what Rick Perry says plays well in his home State of Texas as well as other southern States. Cenk Uygur is actually wrong in this particular clip. Turkey does receive aid in U.S. military and economic support and evidently there are some in the US who now would like to see that stopped.

...wow, much stuff from seemingly (non-Turkish) reliable sources on Youtube that tow the "Turkish" line.

...really bugs someone in Ankara, a lot of money being spent.

He was never going to be a very serious candidate for this years Presidential elections, specially since Obama still has 50-50 chance staying in office, even against a very formidable contender from the Republicans. Perry will be ready in 2016 for the NeoCons to help elect into office, just as they did with Bush in 2000. The NeoCons need a not-too- smart candidate, just like Bush, in order for them to run the government behind the scenes while Perry acts like a buffoon, just as Bush did as the NeoCons ran the government.
