Turkey warns Iran over gas prices
Jan 16, 2012, 16:41 GMT

Istanbul - Turkey may take Iran to international arbitration if it does not agree to reduce the price at which it sells its natural gas, Turkish state news agency Anatolian reported.

Anatolian quoted Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz as saying Turkey had requested that Iran reduce the price of the gas it sells to Turkey, but that it had not received any reply.

'It appears inevitable that we will have to go to arbitration,' he was quoted as stating.

Turkey has been importing gas from Iran since 2001, under a 25-year contract signed in 1996 for 10 billion cubic metres per year.

The warning comes only days after a visit to Ankara by the speaker of the Iranian parliament, Ali Larijani, during which Larijani held meetings with Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

Natural gas imports are not expected to be included in new packages of international sanctions being discussed by the United States and the European Union in response to Iran's controversial nuclear programme.

Turkey's energy regulator last week said it was inviting bids from companies interested in importing electricity from Iran.

here is hint to all you turks....how can you take your supplier to court....stp buying their gas...

but i think deep down the turks are gonna pay for not seeing tehrans point of view...

rocky road ahead for turkey indeed...the eastern vocation has fallen flat in ít's face...the israeli bashing hasn't really earned any points so far...it actually went backwards the day turkey agreed to the US radar...

turkey right now appears to be no friend to the east, west, north and south.....competele isolated...

and there is more

Iraq Accuses Turkey of Meddling

Iraq summoned Turkey's ambassador on Monday to protest Ankara's alleged meddling in Iraqi politics, the latest sign of how the Arab Spring and a waning U.S. presence have left Sunni Turkey in growing competition with its Shiite neighbors.

Iraq's government was angered by recent warnings from Turkish leaders that Sunni-Shiite tensions in Iraq could engulf the entire Islamic world, as well as by Turkey's support for a Sunni rival to Iraq's Shiite prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki.

"Turkey interferes by backing certain political figures and blocs" in Iraq, Mr. Maliki said in an interview last month. "I believe Turkey is unqualified to intervene in the region's flash points."

In a weekend interview with Arabic language Al-Hurra TV station, Mr. Maliki went further. "Unfortunately Turkey is playing a role that could lead to a catastrophe or civil war in the region," he said.

Turkey a bad model for new Arab states’

Panelists at the recent Doha Debates held at Bosphorus University, where an audience voted that the Turkish political model should not be followed by young Arab democracies

Emerging Arab democracies were warned not to follow the example set by the Turkish political system by the audience at the latest Doha Debates, with 59% of viewers supporting the motion that “This House believes Turkey is a bad model for the new Arab states.”
The debate was held at Bosphorus University, and produced a sustained attack on Ankara’s record on human rights and media freedom.
Award winning journalist and author, Ece Temelkuran, who was recently dismissed from her newspaper for a series of campaign reports, drew huge support from the audience as she referred to an example of the government’s crackdown on critics.
“Arabs should talk to Arabs about which model is best for them,” she said, arguing “they should hear their own voices. Turkey cannot be a model because Arabs already have enough problems.”
Senior Transatlantic Fellow for Middle East, North Africa and the Islamic World at the German Marshall Fund, Hassan Mneimneh said Arabs should learn from other models of good governance around the world.
“Beware of the use of the Turkish model as a cover for the insertion of Islamism into positions of power where the Islamists would be really entrenched in the Arab world,” he warned.
Speaking against the motion were former Turkish diplomat Sinan Ulgen and award-winning Moroccan journalist and co-editor of the news website, lakome.com, Aboubakr Jamai.
Both opponents suggested that while there are problems associated with the Turkish model, it is a work in progress and offers an example to Arab countries in political turmoil.
“This is a workable model for us because I do believe that Islamism can evolve in our countries and because our population relate to this model,” said Jamai.
Ulgen said that for reasons associated to geographic proximity, culture, religion and tradition, the Turkish model should work for the Arab world, particularly in Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt.
More lightheartedly, he also referred to the success of Turkish soap operas in Arab countries, saying “that tells us something about Turkey in the Arab world.”

If the Arab Spring was all about having Democracy for their future, why on earth would they want to have "Turkey Model" for their future? :?

All this “Arab Spring” seems to be doing is replacing US-backed puppets with Islamists.
