Large Casino Complex On The Way?

Postby Hermes » Fri Dec 30, 2011 3:30 pm

Yesterday there was a news story about a mysterious large foreign investment project in Cyprus.

Finance Minister reveals large foreign investment in Cyprus

Minister of Finance Kikis Kazamias revealed on Wednesday that a foreign investor is seriously interested in investing in a large project that would boost both the flagging construction industry and Cyprus' tourism sector.

Kazamias accompanied the foreign investor during a meeting with Cypriot President Demetris Christofias. ''The particular possible investment is both large and serious and concerns the possibility for an investment in any location deemed appropriate for the construction industry and which would boost our tourist product,'' he said responding to questions, adding the project concerns ''a big building complex which would enrich our tourist product.''

Kazamias declined to elaborate, noting that further details will be given by the investor himself.

Last night on Sigma it was announced that it seems the potential investor is the secretive American multi-billionaire Sheldon Adelson - one of the richest men on the planet - owner of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, and who recently built the famous hotel-casino The Venetian in Las Vegas.

Reportedly, Adelson is interested in building a major casino complex in Cyprus comparable to the standards of casinos he runs in Las Vegas.

Yes, read elsewhere that the site of the old LCA is a potential site for this.

VP will call the EU to put a stop to any casino projects in the south, since this will violate the few TCs Human Rights in the north from making a living from the Turkish owned casinos in the north!

Rather bad news I would say. We can do with other kinds of investments.

Rather good news I think. It's a potential investment in the tourism sector. Not everybody can work in the energy or finance sectors. And this is not investment which is preventing investment in other areas. Mr. Adelson is not going to invest in energy, electronics or agriculture for example. He's in the hotel and casino business. And Cyprus needs good quality hotels and a casino.

We're not planning to let the Turkish mafia run any casinos in the free areas. As for Adelson, I think Las Vegas has long cleaned up its act. It's like Disneyland for grown-ups these days.

Having been to Las Vegas more times than Halil has had hot dinners ( OK, perhaps close 2nd  ), it is one of the most enjoyable places to be, as long as you don't go over 3 days being there. It is like Disneyland for Adults, even though it is also a family destination for many Americans, because there is so much for the kids to do also. The only problem is, just building one or two large Casinos in the RoC will not make it a Las Vegas style destination, UNLESS they build many facilities to attract ALL people to visit the "Resort complex" and not just cater for the gamblers. It has to be very family friendly place, since many families visit Cyprus for a vacation, so why not take some money from them also and not just from heavy gamblers.
