Untouchable British Bases, from a Brit like myself!

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Untouchable British Bases, from a Brit like myself!

Postby MrH » Thu Dec 22, 2011 10:34 am

Regardless of my Half-ethnic Turkish Cypriot background, my nationality and my first country is British/Britain, respectively. Getting to the point, and in all my experience and developed contacts across the entire Turko-Greco-Brit Spectrum of the Cyprus issue, I can say with confidence that the Greek Cypriots can never touch the British bases in any way or form. And, perhaps more importantly with regards to this string, if the Greek Cypriots ever tried anything uncomfortable against us British/Government regarding our Cyprus Sov-Bases, their entire ideology of the Cyprus issue would switch over night - that's how powerful British politics is at all levels against the puny Greek Cypriot political dealers in the REAL world of the Cyprus Poker game. Look back in recent history; events of 1974, the continuing of Turkey in Northern Cyprus etc, etc, blah blah where you may understand why it's important to keep us Brits happy and never annoy us. My British father once said, the Greek Cypriots know the consequences if they should ever step on our toes. At the time I thought my father was playing Brit-tough, but over the many years I have realised that the Greek Cypriots can never act against the British, and if they should suddenly grow some muscles in that direction, the British Government could even force the Recognition of the TRNC in a split second if they wanted to, and the Greek Cypriot upper establishment know it. The truth is that the Greek Cypriots have been given half a carrot and have been told to shut up and accept its fate, which is obviously the case, and has been since 1974.

Dare to deny, or change it - if you can!

Look Mr preparation H I am fully British and proud of it but support the idea of the whole of the Island including the SBA being under the sovereignty of the ROC, and I susect that sooner or later the British will realise that the SBA are an anachronism that is no longer of benefit and above all too expensive to afford, and at that stage will reach an accomadation with the ROC to hand them over.

It could be mutually beneficial for both England and Cyprus to accomodate the SBA's on the Island and run them jointly.

The Brits dont necessarily need to be there all the time, they can train the Cypriot National Gaurd to administer the installations and intelligence hardware and reserve the right to return and use them at any time.

Is this workable? Is it a better idea?

Your are wasting your breath. We know exactly what kind of pirates and robbers the British and the Turkish states are. No wonder they are so much in love with each other. But be sure that before long the Brits will not afford to keep the bases and will hand them over to the Americans and NATO. Till then you can just sit back and try to figure out how did little Cyprus manage to stop both of them from robbing it from it's wealth (I mean the EEZ) which they both tried to do with their Annan Plan.

From your confession on harbouring enemy interests, I take it that by "Greek Cypriots" you mean the rightful government over the whole of Cyprus, i.e. the RoC-EU (which is actually composed of individuals from a multitude of 'minorities').

In which case, it is ill-placed confidence. You must have sensed something unnerving to make this final, jingoistic stance. :D

Yup, due to the UK's precipitous position; the special Protocols made upon Cyprus' EU accession are foregrounded.

At best, the SBAs are merely administered by the UK, subject to agreement from the RoC and mitigation for EU laws. In other words, all that goes on in the SBAs must be approved by RoC-EU before exclusions (eg for UK-specific taxes and customs) can be administered by the UK.

The RoC is already "touching" - From Article 7:

"4. The United Kingdom and the Republic of Cyprus shall cooperate to ensure the effective implementation of this Protocol in the Sovereign Base Areas"

And Part 4 of the Annex cites:

"6. The United Kingdom authorities shall maintain constant close cooperation with the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus..."

Yup - they're coming home! :D
