Is CYBC trying to wean us off our "Greekness"?

Postby CBBB » Wed Dec 21, 2011 9:13 am

CYBC started a new game show this week called "Παίζουμε Κυπριακά" (something like "We play Cypriot".

This show is all about highlighting the Cypriot dialect and I was just wondering if this is an attempt by the Government to try to instil a more "Cypriot" feeling in its audience, and wean us off the "we are Greek" attitude of many people.

I have to admit to knowing quite a few of the Cypriot words and not the Greek equivalents, but everyone calls me a peasant any way!

Cypriot is a dialect of Greek, so no.

One can easily be Nicosian, Cypriot, Greek and European and emphasizing any part of our identity doesn't come on the expense of another, quite the contrary.

Those who tried to wean us off our Greekness are some others, who wanted to keep our island isolated in order to make it easier for themselves to continue serving their interests on our expense.

There is a reason behind everything, my friend. Just be alert. And resist 8)

Kissinger about the Greeks

As reported in the popular Greek magazine, Oikonomikos Tachydromos on 14 Aug. 1997, Henry Kissinger, while addressing a group of Washington, D.C. businessmen in Sept.1974, said:

The Greek people are anarchic and difficult to tame. For this reason we must strike deep into their cultural roots: Perhaps then we can force them to conform. I mean, of course, to strike at their language, their religion, their cultural and historical reserves, so that we can neutralize their ability to develop, to distinguish themselves, or to prevail; thereby removing them as an obstacle to our strategically vital plans in the Balkans, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East.”
