Where do we go after January 2012?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

On our side, Cyprus will lead the EU in the second half of this year and plans to auction more blocks off its southern coast. So far, drilling has proven wonderful results.

On your side, the so called "trnc" is still pushing for a Taiwanese model as a solution but that hasn't worked for 30 years.

Thanks for asking.

Erm... Do try keeping up and living in the real world VP.

Given in the past few days, Turkey has screwed up relations with France... leading nation in the EU and a Permanent Member of the UN Sec Council.

Your chances of getting anything past the EU or the UN are ZERO.

Well done, you have at least acknowledged that even though it was against our will the GCs took us all into the EU, if you ask yourself why, its because they claim to represent all Cypriots regardless of their ethnic origins which includes the TCs, now how can the EU discriminate against TCs? once they see we cannot agree a solution there will no longer be any excuses and we will milk this EU angle for all its worth to go forward in our TRNC.

You can only play the game according to the available rules and the EU has entered the rule book, we cannot be held hostage to GCs intransigence.

Try and pay attention to what people are telling you, Viewpoint. They do so not to score cheap debating points but so that you can understand the reality of the situation. Let me try and be clear for you so as to help you.

I remind you of Protocol 10 of the Accession Treaty. As you know the EU Council of Ministers legal office ruled that any plans to lift the sanctions on the "trnc" violated existing EU regulations since the occupied areas cannot be viewed as separate legal territory from member state Cyprus. Therefore, all EU linkages to the Turkish occupied-side of the island would have to go through the official government of Cyprus. This includes trade, EU aid, university recognition etc. In a similar fashion, air links between north Cyprus and the rest of the world cannot be established as long as international conventions and the UN view the ROC as the legitimate government. Short of a UN Security Council resolution that would lift economic isolation of the north, direct air flights to airports in the "trnc" cannot be established.

Given that the UN, EU and international law are all locked down and firmly on the Republic's side; given that Cyprus exercises a veto in the EU and that it is looking forward as a full member as EU President; given that Turkey is universally perceived as responsible for the division and occupation of the island; given that Cyprus is looking forward to enhancing its status, sovereignty, economic influence and prestige by supplying Europe's energy needs for decades to come - given all this, surely you can see that the "trnc" is not only up shit-creek, it doesn't have a paddle.

Now you explain to me how the "trnc" can overcome all of this, without any legal or diplomatic support or foundation. Even your "leaders" know there is zero-chance of lifting the sanctions. If you want full EU rights and freedoms in the north the only way is to end the occupation and division of the island. There is no other path. Kind of a tough one for you, as a self-avowed partitionist. :D

Look try and grasp what Im gonna say for once, with no solution both sides will be blamed for the impasse not just the TCs add to this the support of the AP by the TCs and you will be left with an EU that wants to bring the TCs in from the cold seeing that they are EU members and due to the EU philosophy should be punished due to other influences be it the GCs or Turkey, this is the card we will play....this will lead to great pressure on the GCs to relax a few of the not so important issues to support the economy in the north thus aiding the Tcs to move away from Turkey financial support stronghold. So like it or not the pressure will be back on the south to help and not penalize the north as if you claim your are one country your should act like it and treat all your citizens in the same manner otherwise you go against everything the EU stands for.
