A Sign Of the Times

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

A Sign Of the Times

Postby Hermes » Sun Dec 11, 2011 10:58 pm

French President Sarkozy completely ignores British Prime Minister David Cameron and warmly greets the President of Cyprus. What does it mean? Where does this leave Turkey's EU bid now that its biggest friend Britain is isolated in Europe? Anyway, good luck to plucky Cyprus. Sitting as an equal at the table with the big boys! Doesn't our dear Leader look pleased?

Thanks for the post hermes I wouldn't otherwise had noted the interaction. Mind you Cameron looked just as much in a hurry. And can almost think he couldn't give a hoot whether sarkozy spoke to him or not.

I think turkey's EU bit is up shit creek but so is Cyprus' freedom.

Possibly! The British Press have interpreted it as a snub to Cameron though. Also, I agree that Turkey's EU bid is really up shit-creek. It just means it has to try much much harder if it wants to join!

Is it a coincidence that the two EU outcasts, Turkey and (now) UK, both have military occupations in Cyprus?

Britain has always had about 2% of her eggs in the EU’s basket and the remainder in America’s!

It was a Anglo-American idea to inject an incompatible Turkey into the EU to cause havoc so that they would then act as “mediators” and control Europe, but they miscalculated the French & German alliance’s resolve of being in control of Europe themselves!

I see Britain departing from the EU sooner than abandoning her American alliance… but I also feel that the US’ dominant days are numbered and that may force Britain to accept and be party of the EU 100% …seeing no other option!

I would like to point out that Turkey has been seeking to be an EU member since 1963, Long before Britain joined.

I for one however cannot support Turkey's accession unless and until there are a number of very significant changes within Turkey, of which but one is a complete change in policy to Cyprus, including complete withdrawal of all troops and settlers, recognition of the ROC, full and free access of Cypriot connected ships and aircraft to Turkish ports and airspace.

Spot on, GR. I think the plan was that Britain wanted Turkey in the EU to form an alliance with Turkey, the Scandinavian countries and other Easter European countries so as to to weaken the influence of Germany and France. Instead France and Germany outmaneuvered Cameron and pushed Britain (and Turkey's EU accession) onto the margins. The result is that the EU is now firmly back under German (and to a lesser extent) French control. Which is bad news for Turkey. But Cyprus is firmly in the good books of France and Germany it seems - especially now as we can sell them some of our gas!
