Electrical help please..

Postby Svetlana » Tue Dec 06, 2011 7:33 am

I have replaced some 9w bulbs with 7w bulbs in Christmas, I mean 'Holiday' ,decorations, but they seem not to work; is it because of the difference in the wattage?

The wattage determines the strength of the luminance and thus energy consumption so that isn’t your problem. The problem must be the voltage… the 9W bulbs were probably 220v and this particular 7W may well be 120V in which case it would need a transformer.

Read what it says on the lamps or boxes… it should tell you.

No, the wattage is immaterial, just means one will be brighter than the other.

if your Christmas (and b*llocks to the PC brigade) lights are of the type where all bulbs need to work, try switching places the new bulbs in positions where the original bulbs work.

if they are of the type where they all come on irrespective of whther there are bulbs missing try the 7w bulbs in places where they normally light to check if they work ok.

When you put them in and switched on I guess they didn't light immediately? leave them on for a few seconds in case they are flasher bulbs and need to heat up.

Failing all of that, chuck the lot and buy a new set

But she didn’t say “Christmas tree lights” but “decorations” which is a plural word implying various xmas novelties powered individually.

Do you have a proper Cyprus 3-pin plug or a dodgy 2-pin plug? If the latter please contact Sotos directly before you electrocute yourself.

I would rather say Jesus Christ's birthday. Although I don't like Xmas cake.

Surely the first thing to do is to check the fuse, if we're talking about a string of lights for a CHRISTMAS tree say.

Generally if they're CHRISTMAS tree fairy lights, the first bulb in the string, perhaps marked with a dab of white, will be the fused bulb.

If they're a string of normal bulbs... check the fuse in the plug.

Did i ask whether this was for a CHRISTMAS tree ???

Well, lets progress from incitement to utter provocation. 8)
