Tyre Pressure Guage

Postby Tracey Anthony » Sun Dec 04, 2011 3:34 pm

Does anyone know where we may be able to buy a tyre pressure guage in Larnaca? My daughter has recently passed her driving test and has got her first car. She has just been told that she needs to buy 4 new tyres but looking at them (via Skype) they seem okay. I have asked her to buy a tyre pressure guage but she cant find one anywhere. Hopefully someone on this forum can help us. Thanks Tracey

The next time she goes to fill up at a gas station she can ask the attendant to also check/adjust her tire pressure for free.

Its a free service here.

Who told her that She needs new tyres, Police/MOT station or someone looking to make a buck off of a girlie that doesn't know about cars??.
Sidewalls do crack in the Sun here, so not that unusual.

Opps, mum got it wrong, its not the tyre pressure is the actual tyre tread guage she is looking for.

She has been and had the tyre pressure done at the gas station, thanks for that.

Didnt realise that the sidewalls crack in the sun but I guess with the temperatures in Cyprus you are right, its not unusual. It is a family member, who doesnt know about cars that have told her to get new tyres. Obviously, as she travels to Nicosia every day she is worried about driving the car if she needs new tyres and I told her to get a guage to check the tread. She has asked at a couple of gas stations to buy a guage but they dont sell them. I just wondered if someone knew where she could get one from as I am sure, if she goes to a tyre place, they will try and talk her into buying new tyres, even if she doesnt need them and for peace of mind, she would buy them. Unless someone knows of a trustworthy tyre place that she could go to?

If the car she bought is used then there is a high chance that the tires will need to be changed. She can buy Chinese tires which are cheaper.

Thanks for your words of advice. She still needs to purchase this guage though.

Can just say as well as a collection of tools, no motorist should be without a power pack which contains a compressor with a decent pressure gauge cos i never trust those gauges at stations and tyre pressures are so critical for handling and safety... and as well as said compressor these will have a small battery for engine starting when the battery is flat and a lamp-light. The one i have even has an inverter with a normal mains socket so we can power a tv or a table light or two during power black-outs for a couple of hours.

Its not rocket science. You can see if the thread is less than 2mm.

In saying that, it's not just the thread but the overall condition of the tyre. is it worn around the edges, is the thread depth constant across the complete width.

If safety is the issue, what price safety, get them changed and be sure.

Even if they measured the thread depth, is it enough??? Come on, change the tyre for better or for worst and just put it down to motoring costs.

Simples.

If it's depth of tyre tread you're worrying about, a reminder that modern tyres have Indicators built in to them.

Get someone to run a finger along the inner grooves in the tread to find them. The tyre tread has to be above the level of these little indicators.

Here's a picky of what these indicators look like and where you might find them...
