Unfortunately for the above poster there are thousands of Turkish Cypriots who cross over into the free areas every week to work, visit and to travel, with very little signs of trouble. Given that the island is under a violently-enforced Turkish occupation this is surely proof of the remarkable tolerance and goodwill of Greek Cypriots.
I take this as a much better guide for future interaction between the two communities than mob antics at a sporting event. Of course there are some TCs who would like to believe that violence is inevitable between the two communities and therefore the island needs to be partitioned: as Turkey and the TC leadership advocated in the 1960s (see my post on the previous page).
Unfortunately, this is not supported by the peaceful co-existence of the communities prior to the TMT insurgency of the 1950s. Or by present peaceful interactions since the border crossings were opened.
