Russian-Israeli joint exercise at Cyprus?

Postby Altalena » Tue Nov 29, 2011 12:36 pm

Hi all,
I'm new here, was wondering whether you living in Cyprus can confirm these news from the Famagusta Gazette:

"Informed sources have said that the Russian navy and Israeli military will hold joint exercises next week close to Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone."
http://famagusta-gazette.com/russian-na ... 594-69.htm

This is supposed to be taking place right now. Any of you know if it is indeed happening? Perhaps seen a large Russian-looking ship crusing around, joined by some star-of-david decorated vehicles? :)

Thanks,
A.

Welcome.

Interesting choice of name, Altalena, considering your first thread topic.

Do you view these manoeuvres with dread?

Hi GreekIslandGirl,

actually this is the standard name I use at most forums, didn't even consider the coincidence of how it relates to the (supposed) event.
But since I could only find these news in a single source, the Famagusta Gazette, I don't know how likely it is that it's real. I'd be glad to get any confirmation from you guys in Cyprus.
It would be an interesting development, given the Russian involvement in Syria. To have the Kuznetsov battleship exercise with the IDF, and then take off to Tartus to presumably protect Assad sounds a bit puzzling.
But I wouldn't find it dreadful, on the contrary.

Well, well, well ... that would be an amazing coincidence, Altalena. Especially since you seem so in the 'know' otherwise.

Still, I'll reserve judgment. :)

Good luck extracting the information which you require .....

Well, if I were what you suppose I am, I don't think I'd need a public message board to get any kind of military information :)

Now you are making boastful assumptions as to what I thought. :) I have no doubts, you are just a seasoned forum poster, from whichever divide.

Perhaps you can tell us what you find of interest about these manoeuvres, since they don't fill you with dread? :)

What I heard today is that Turkey is considering military intervention (invasion?) in Syria. Of course we support Assad on this one. The fact that the Syrian dictator is murdering his own people makes no difference to us while we hold the moral high grounds. Who remembers the Palestinians one might ask as well.

I don't see how either side can claim the moral high ground when a Saudi-backed Sunni dictator clashes with Shiite rebels backed by terrorist Iran...

Instead of moralizing, I find it more interesting to consider what will happen when Turkey comes forth with that intervension and finds itself facing a Russian fleet on route to Syria.

Actually, make that reversed: Iran-backed dictator, etc.
Though that doesn't change the equation.
