Where have we said that we "support Assad on this one"? Can you point me to any evidence? This was the Cypriot FM just yesterday backing the Arab League position on Syria:

"We believe foreign intervention should not take place; the Arab League should take the lead with solutions to bring an immediate halt to the violence and pressure President [Bashar] Assad to step down.

As for the Palestinians this was the Cypriot FM again yesterday re-iterating Cyprus's support for a Palestinian state:

Referring to the Middle East issue, Dr Marcoullis repeated Cyprus’ longstanding position of principles vis-à-vis the struggle of the Palestinian people, asserting that the return to the negotiating table and the resumption of the dialogue constitute the only path towards the solution of the problem and the establishment of an independent and viable Palestinian state.

So can you please refrain from making wild and unsubstantiated comments. It's really unhelpful.

I understand Hermes, the same Dr Markoullis who waited for the fall of Gaddafi before expressing our country's support for the revolutionary council and the rebel government. The same government which did not want to displease Assad regarding the murderous ammunition that destroyed our economy and resulted in the death of 13 people. You know what? This corrupt logic was endorsed by all our parties, and more especially by EDEK which has close relations with the Syrian regime and of course with Gaddafi.

What will Russia stand to lose if Assad goes? Perhaps the ports for its Mediterranean fleet? We can accommodate the Russian fleet here. Start playing big global politics like we did when Makarios was in charge and good bye Cyprus, for good this time.

Cyprus recognised the Libyan NTC before the African Union, before the IMF and before some Arab countries. In fact, Cyprus was one of many countries to recognise the NTC after its fighters' entry into Tripoli on 21 August.

As for Syria, I have never endorsed Cyprus's non-alignment and its flirtation with Gaddafi and Assad. I believe such a policy is short-sighted and self-defeating. I have no time for the Cypriot left's anti-NATO gesture politics either. Cyprus is now following the Arab League's policies on Syria which is the sensible thing to do.

Cyprus has a difficult balancing act to placate all the global forces around it especially at a time of such upheaval in the region. Ms Narcoullis is doing well to steer through all of the difficult foreign policy decisions facing Cyprus. It's to Cyprus's credit that we have managed to secure crucial support for our EEZ from all the members of the UN Security Council. A triumph of Cypriot diplomacy I might add.

I also saw it in the links below. But I think they reproduce one another.
Find it hard to believe though, considering that there was no official announcement from either country, nor any notams about the engagement of particular areas for such an activity. Besides, the two countries have conflicting interests in respect to Syria and Iran.

Thanks, kimon. No, I don't think it likely either due to the conflicting interests re Syria, that's why it seemed a fascinating piece of news.
