The United Nations will call a new summit between Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders in January to prod flagging peace talks after a two-day meeting failed to score a substantial breakthrough, a source close to talks said on Monday.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who oversaw a large part of negotiations in Long Island on Sunday and Monday, was expected on Tuesday to announce a new meeting in mid-January to assess progress, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Although the sides agree in principle to unite Cyprus under a federal umbrella, there are deep disputes on how to co-govern, territorial adjustments between two future constituent states and the property claims of thousands of internally displaced people.
Sources say of particular difficulty were different interpretations of executive rule. Greek Cypriots have proposed rotating presidency under a cross and weighted voting system, while Turkish Cypriots advocate rotating presidency with a separate ballot for each ethnic group.
"There has not been a substantive change in positions," the source said, referring not only to the executive question but also issues relating to property rights of displaced persons and
The conflict has since bedeviled Turkey's attempts to join the European Union.
It has been thrown into sharper focus this year after Cyprus launched exploratory drilling for gas off its southern shores.
Turkey says the move will harm peace talks and says that any potential hydrocarbon wealth belongs to both communities on the island.
The government counters it is the Republic of Cyprus’ sovereign right to explore for hydrocarbons, and imminently plan a new licensing round to auction off exploration plots south of the island.
The move, in which Russian and French companies will reportedly be given precedence, is seen as an attempt by Cyprus to buffer itself from any potential Turkish claims in the area. (Reuters)

Am not sure how Turkey can argue that exploration of gas and oil resources will harm the reunification process. The damned process is no process is a stale mate. So it wont change a thing, other than keep the free Cyprus into an evolving community and the occupied regime an army base for turkey with a few TC's who will be extinct within 70 years or so.

Such kind posts towards our TC brothers, I am welling up. Can't hold the tears any more.

You will find that the problem started when Christofias announced that they will drill before the October meeting so Turkey can cause a scene and he can then avoid going to New York. The second mistake was that he announced that he will give nothing to the TCs unless there is an agreement. How kind of him to be so generous.

Fortunately Turkey did not take the bait, but after January meeting, there no knowing what Turkey will do especially now that she has lost interest in joining the EU.

I support Christofias on bith accounts. He cannot hold the Country back in case there is an agreement.

Secondly the TC brothers claim they have their own Country, therefore they are not entitled to anything from the resource boom. And do not deserve a reward for prohibiting another human being their basic rights.

The EU’s admission of the South Cyprus administration into the Union, under the guise of the government of the 1960 –Republic of Cyprus– makes no difference to the inherent rights of the Turkish Cypriots. What are these inherent rights? The irrefutable fact that the Turkish Cypriots were one of the two founding members of the original “Republic of Cyprus” and that they were the sovereign equals of the whole island of Cyprus................simple as this.....

The whole of the island is in the EU. However, in the northern part of the island, in the areas in which the Government of Cyprus does not exercise effective control, EU legislation is suspended in line with Protocol 10 of the Accession Treaty 2003. The situation will change once a Cyprus settlement enters into force and it will then be possible for EU rules to apply over the whole of the island. However, the suspension does not affect the personal rights of Turkish Cypriots as EU citizens. They are citizens of a Member State, the Republic of Cyprus, even though they may live in the northern part of Cyprus, the areas not under government control.

Typical Turk, you want your 'inheritance rights', but the indiginous GC cannot have his over the lands you stole and are holding by blackmail.

You invaded the first time and took these rights from the GC, you invaded the 2nd time and took more rights from the GC and now you have the god damn audacity to be claiming rights, hade FU.

What a plonker, you think this is a turkish bazzar where you sell you women!
