Israel Turkey Confrontation at Sea ?????

Postby bill cobbett » Fri Nov 04, 2011 4:11 pm

As you'll all know two boats are sailing towards Gaza in violation of the legitimate Israeli blockade.

The boats are now just 50 miles from the Gaza coast and have been contacted by Israeli navy boats and asked to turn away or head for an Israeli port where cargos might be inspected or to Egypt. According to Israeli sources the boats are refusing to cooperate and are expecting to be boarded at sea.

The protesters have undertaken not to resist any boarding.

Turkish PM Erdogan has recently threatened to use the Turkish Navy to confront Israel's legitimate right to inspect boats and cargos trying to break the blockade.

Let's hope that Erdogan and the Turkish Navy backs down from the threats of interference and the boarding and inspection passes peacefully.

Turkey already stated that these boats are not Turkish flagged, therefore Turkey does not intend to do anything about it. It's a good way for her to exit gracefully all the big rhetoric she made few weeks ago. My guess is, we will not be seeing any Turkish flagged ships heading to Gaza anytime soon!

Yes, from a bit more reading, the risk of a confrontation between Israel and Turkey on this occasion does look to be minimal, despite Erdogan's rhetoric to provide escort for boats challenging the blockade.

Yes, BBC and others reporting that the boats have been boarded and are under tow towards Ashdod, Israel.

The Israeli Navy intercepted both vessels, Israeli comandos boarded them and both boats were taken to Ashdod Port in Israel.

Mr. Erdogan did not appear to be between the passengers, nor anywhere near the seen. As for the Turkish Navy, which was supposed to prevent the Israeli Navy from intercepting boats headed for the Gaza, it seems like they were too busy trying to keep the Pri Reis afloat.

Another international ridicule for Turkey, espeially to the eyes of the Palestinians who had been naïve enough to look upon Erdogan as the new Nasser and upon Turkey as a super power.

“Turkey’s road map on this matter is already certain, “said Yıldırım, adding that there would be no project formed and run in the Eastern Mediterranean “without Turkey’s consent.”

I'm sure Israel has gotten Turkey's consent for them to board flotilla ships destined to Gaza and for the RoC and Israel to drill for Oil and Gas in the Eastern Mediterranean.

I mean, how else could they have done all the above otherwise?
