Bananiot will soon post that we should be severely punished for going back on our word!

Christofias probably offered continuous presidency to the TCs.

That plus his anus in case they get bored.

Not sure I would want it, if I were a Turk. :o

It says he offered continuous Vice-Presidency. As under the former system.

Which 'former' system?

I thought we decided, yesterday, that the 1960 Constitution is not 'former'. And the answer to your question is a big 'OXI' - or, is that too soon?

I will investigate your case further.
The 1960 Constitution is former because every so called 'guarantor' has had sexual intercourse with it, leaving us Cypriots without any choice but to abandon it.
Anyway it was a partitionist constitution, imposed by foreigners, and should go to the dustbin of history, along with the 2004 Annan Plan.

Rotating president off the table

THE MUCH-criticised proposal for a rotating presidency in a united federal republic has reportedly been withdrawn by President Demetris Christofias as a result of backtracking on other provisions by his Turkish Cypriot counterpart.

According to yesterday’s Politis, Christofias has withdrawn his proposal for a rotating presidency in the last two meetings of the peace negotiations following Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu’s backpedalling on the provision for cross-voting in a federal executive.

Christofias and Eroglu’s predecessor Mehmet Ali Talat had reached an agreement on this aspect of governance and power-sharing after much debate and horse-trading. The two finally agreed between January and March 2010 to have an alternating Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot president of the federation, both of whom would be voted by both communities, though each community’s vote for a candidate from the other community would be weighted according to its size.

The proposal was met with fierce resistance from coalition partners at the time, DIKO and EDEK, who argued against having a Turkish Cypriot president and in favour of the principle of one man one
vote. The president’s refusal to withdraw the proposal comprised part of the reasons that led both DIKO and EDEK to eventually leave the government coalition.
According to Politis, Christofias informed the National Council last Friday that he has finally withdrawn the proposal due to Eroglu’s decision not to accept the previously agreed position on cross-voting.

Eroglu had counter-proposed keeping the rotating presidency while putting cross-voting to a referendum or post-solution vote by the federal parliament and senate. Christofias rejected this proposal, returning instead to the original position of having a Greek Cypriot president and Turkish Cypriot vice-president, with a vote on rotating presidency and cross-voting to take place six years after a solution by parliament and the senate.

The paper said the president made it clear to party leaders in the National Council that he would return his proposal for a rotating presidency should Eroglu have a change of heart on cross-voting.

Before he agrees to any more foolish nonsense:

- Can we have a 'rotating presidency' now, please?

[Even PM Papandreou would do ... :) (as interim) ]

The Greeks did enough damage to CYPRUS and CYPRIOTS in 1974 and just look at the mess they are in now! If they cannot solve their own problems I would not trust any Greek Politician to Solve CYPRIOT Problems/ Papandreou as the PM of a foriegn country, namely Greece
can therefore keep his butt out of Cyprus.

Now go back to Lesbos!
