Indeed it is. Ankara needs to be seen as handling this disaster effectively or the pkk which is active in that region will have their ranks swell. It is interesting that Reuters is now stating that the Turkish government has declined aid offers from Israel and Greece.

Well it is is their loss....

Contentions Erdoğan Would Rather See Turks Die Than to Have Them Rescued by Israelis

Jonathan S. Tobin | @tobincommentary

How determined is Turkey to repudiate its decades-long alliance with Israel? Today’s decision by the Turks to reportedly refuse assistance from Israel is a stunning indication of how far the Islamist government in Ankara is willing to go to make a point.
Over 1,000 persons are feared dead in the aftermath of a quake that measured 7.2 on the Richter scale.

That message was from NATO which is an alliance. So nothing unusual about this.

More than 1,000 rescue workers from about 30 provinces are heading to Van, about 1,300 miles from Istanbul, said Mustafa Aydogdu, a spokesman for the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency.

Greek Foreign Minister Stavros Lambrinidis spoke with Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu to extend his condolences and assured him the country was prepared to assist its eastern neighbor, the ministry in Athens said in an e-mailed statement. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization also said by e-mail that it stands “ready to assist our ally Turkey.”

Israel offered aid to its former strategic ally Turkey and their presidents spoke by telephone on Sunday after a powerful earthquake struck southeast Turkey.

Time is of the essence for those affected by this disaster and it must be repeated again and again that Turkey is declining aid from countries like Greece and Israel. Why?

Perhaps the turkish govt doesn't like the implication that it - all-powerful that it is - must accept help in order to look after its own people from these weak, morally and financially bankrupt states that it seeks to dominate (sorry, "lead"). Or perhaps it wants to stage-manage things so that its rhetoric doesn't look hollow (as if it's not hollow enough already). Regarding Israel especially - consider all the recent rhetoric about the Israelis being gross violators of human rights - how would the turk govt. look if all of a sudden the israelis were providing humanitarian assistance by setting up field hospitals and saving turkish citizens from lingering and unnecessary deaths?

It is something amazing, the lengths to which this petty tyrant, Erdogan, will go in his pissing match with my country. Israelis, on the other hand, largely remember that the discord is with Mad Dog Erdogan, not the Turkish people, and the offer of aid was immediate and genuine. How atrocious that innocent quake victims are going to die, when they could be rescued!

Why, did Mad Dog decline Israeli aid?

Perhaps, he does not place much value on the life of 'Mountain Turks' ? Rather, a timely and opportune destruction of that region, wouldn't you say?
