Flurry of Τurkish military activity off Cyprus
Mon, Oct 17, 2011
A flurry of Τurkish military activity off the coast off Cyprus and over its flight control area are being monitored, due to the Republics' natural gas exploration in its exclusive economic zone.

Meanwhile, the Turkish exploration boat Piri Reis, has been sailing since early this morning, around 85 kilometers from the Noble Energy platform where natural gas exploratory drilling is being conducted on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus.

Turkish military ships are keeping a close eye in international waters.

Defence minister Dimitris Iliadis assured that the government is closely monitoring the situation, keeping calm and responsible.

at wot point does it become responsible - in consultation with cyprus's guarantors and strategic partners - to warn this aggressor that any further infringement of cypriot airspace and waters will be met by force?

how much more bullying do cypriots and the international community have to endure from this demonic rogue state?

We don't have the military force but what we should do is veto everything we can related with Turkey in EU. And I am not just talking about their accession chapters.

absolutely. 'force' can be applied in different ways, but this nonsense from turkey is no longer acceptable and must be met head on.

Nothing much can be done as long as the Turks contain their activities in international waters and airspace (outside the 12 miles). Violation of ICAO rules and the Nicosia FIR can only be tackled with complains to ICAO and the UN. Piri Reis does not and can not touch the sea bed of the EEZ of Cyprus. They are only fooling around to show their flag. They are trying to save face and they are ridiculing themselves. As for our "friends and allies" They are all there with ships, submarines and electronic surveillance planes. Meanwhile, CY is drilling and is preparing to conclude new contracts with France, Russia, UK etc.

yep. guy in yellow got too close so guy in red saw the opportunity to negate a potentially threatening situation by fooling the ref, getting the free kick and turning defence into attack!
