A reminder of how the Pride of The Mighty Turkish Navy, the Piri Piri Reis was described a few weeks ago... ...

..."TURKEY HAS a state-of-the-art, top of the range seismic research vessel, despite its years, said its prickly handlers yesterday after Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis suggested it was not up the task.
“Our vessel is the prettiest daughter of the Mediterranean,” said Doyan Yasar, deputy director of the Institute of Marine Sciences of the University of Izmir to Anatolia news agency.
Yasar was speaking about the seismic research vessel Piri Reis which was sent by Turkey last Friday to study the waters in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for signs of hydrocarbon deposits. The institute is responsible for the vessel."...

The legend of the Piri-Piri

“There was an old boat called the Piri
that searched for black gold in a cheery

But as the captain confessed that the ship was a mess
the crew men were pissed and grew weary

Then the engine had stalled and the crew men were told
that their Ottoman adventure was teary!”

This is part of a report from Hurriyet earlier today by reporter Mehmet Brand that confirms the Clapped Out Piri Reis is Really Well and Truly Clapped Out despite the propaganda denials from Turkey... and that it wasn't fit for purpose in the first place...

http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/n.php? ... 2011-10-14

..."Piri Reis vessel

We are pushing ourselves into funny situations. I am talking about the vessel Piri Reis.

When news of Greek Cyprus’ oil and gas exploration broke, all of a sudden we remembered this 33-year-old ship. We did not have any other option. We had no preparation. In a desperate measure to challenge Greek Cyprus, we decorated Piri Reis and sent it to the sea.

What happened? Its motors collapsed.

It returned. They said it would be repaired and sent back to continue exploring. Officials denied it, but the impression in the public is that this vessel is disintegrating. Anyway, it is enough proof just to take a look at its picture..."

For those who are not familiar with ships:

The Piri boat is having trouble in force 5 winds and waves of 3 meters. Greek passenger ferries sail in conditions up to and including force 8. It has to get to force 9 before sailing of passenger ships is suspended. Totally open ferries, those that look like landing craft, can sail up to and including force 6.

Piri is supposed to be an OCEAN research vessel. Send it to the Indian ocean then, the natural stomping ground of the Turkish navy as Erdo said.

Also it must be the only research vessel that can drill on short order. The Turkish media say it has already drilled in several places in the Cyprus EEZ and will go on to drill in others too. The whole story is pitiful.

Piri Reis struggles through East Med with faulty engine, report says

The Turkey-Fowl and the Pussycat went to sea
In a clapped-out Piri-green boat,
They took some honey to the occupied land where the Bongy-tree grows,
And there in a wood a Secular-Muslim Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose, his nose, his nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.
"Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling your stolen GC home?"
Said the Secular-Muslim Piggy, "I will"
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the Pentadaktylos hill...

.... enough said. :)

Current location of the Koca Piri Reis from marinetraffic.com. It's currently about 60 km off the coast of Limassol where it has been going up and down in a kind of dredging motion:
