EEZ demarcation is based on the Law of the Sea but the details are dependent on bilateral agreements with states. So far Cyprus has concluded agreements with all states that count, for the southern and eastern EEZ, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt.
The Egyptian FM also said that Egypt is keen to conclude a deal for the transport of gas to the EU via Cyprus and Greece.
Zero relevance to its neighbors will be the title of the new policy of you know who.
You mean the military Junta will honor its EEZ deal with Cyprus. Egypt will hold in a few short weeks elections and those that are set to gain many seats are the Muslim brotherhood - a party that wishes to have very close relations with Ankara. This is why Cyprus must act quickly or we will have the same problems that we now have with Lebanon. It is being stated that the RoC will soon start offshore auctions on two blocks - that is simply not enough. Blocks 10 and 11 should be placed up for auction as those are the blocks that neighbor Egypt's EEZ. The French are said to be interested and are willing to safeguard their platforms so bring them in. The Turks claim parts of blocks 1 and 4-7:
It would be best if one of these blocks that are being claimed by Ankara are also placed up for auction and preferably given to an American company so that Ankara would think twice in interfering in our waters. Forget about the other "safe" blocks. Auctions should involve strategic selection and I hope comrade Christofias understands what is at stake now.
