The Official Bagis the Clown Thread

Postby Hermes » Wed Oct 12, 2011 5:14 pm

This is a thread devoted to the clownish antics of Turkey's erstwhile EU Minister, Egemen Bagis. All idiotic comments will be noted.

To begin with, on the day that the EU criticised Turkey for its lack of progress in normalising relations with Cyprus, Bagis gives his reaction:
“It is sad to see that the EU backs the Greek Cypriot agenda,” Bağış told reporters.

Also today, Bagis said that:
European Union candidate Turkey's only goal in talks with the bloc is full membership and no other options are acceptable.

Yesterday, Bagis had this to say on the EU's energy needs:
Referring to the oil and natural gas explorations by the Republic of Cyprus, Bagis stated that if it was not for Turkey, Europe would not be able to reach any energy resources and added that the Greek Cypriot side unilaterally prevents the opening of the energy chapter in Turkey's accession talks creating a crisis. "The 26 countries must say enough anymore to this impertinence", he stated.

There's more. Today was a big day for Turkey's EU Minister and he had a lot to say...

EU report on Turkey out of focus, Turkish minister says

Turkey's EU Minister Egemen Bağış criticized the European Union after it expressed concern in a regular progress report over freedom of expression and said Turkey should do more to normalize its relations with Greek Cyprus.
Bağış, speaking at a press conference soon after the release of the annual report in Brussels, said the report was out of focus.

"Although the report tries to take an objective and balanced picture of Turkey, we think that the camera used by the commission is old with a worn out lens and the lens needs to be changed, as the picture taken has lots of blurred parts and the camera seems to be zooming on the false points," Bağış said.

On individual freedoms, the report said "significant further efforts are required to guarantee fundamental rights in most areas," highlighting in particular concerns in the area of freedom of expression. "...The number of court cases against writers and journalists and the still frequent disproportionate website bans raised serious concerns," the report said.

Bağış said no journalist was in jail in Turkey for journalistic activities, saying journalists do not have criminal immunity just because they are journalists.

In addition to the EU's reform concerns, ppposition from Greek Cyprus as well as French and German reluctance to admit the largely Muslim state are also a main obstacle to Turkish membership, with a "privileged partnership" being mooted as an alternative to regular membership.

"Full membership to the union is Turkey's only goal, no other goals can be accepted," Bağış told the news conference. "We hope that the EU will soon emerge from its eclipse of the mind," he added in comments on the report.

“Some European member countries might fear that Turkey's population, strength and dynamics might pose a threat to them. But we are determined to push on with the reforms and raise our standards. We may decide to be a member or not when the time comes.”

“In Israel, they have a foreign minister who flushes the toilet as he speaks on radio. The guy in his youth was a nightclub bodyguard in Moldova. He still thinks of himself as one and cannot pass on to being a statesman. Israel’s foreign policy has been entrusted to this man because they don’t have an election threshold.”

“The pace of accession negotiations would gain new momentum if Turkey proceeded to the full implementation of its customs-union obligations with the EU and made progress toward normalization of relations with Cyprus,” said the report. “The deadlock will affect both sides,” said Bağış, adding that without Turkish Cyprus and Turkey, the EU could be described as a lame duck.

In response to a question about whether Greek Cyprus would continue to search for natural recourses in the region, Bağış said that if they go deeper, then Turkish Cyprus would go deeper too.

However, I am also concerned about the arrested journalists, in addition, these people are not in jail because of their journalistic activities but because they are accused of other crimes,” Bağış said.
