She was previously FM between 2007-2008 under Tassos Papadopoulos I believe.

Have to say after reading Ambassador Zenon's letter in the Financial Times yesterday and now Ms Marcoulli's interview in the WSJ that I'm impressed by the calibre of our diplomats. At least the diplomatic service is one department of our government that seems to be working well.

I know she has a lot of fans here, so here is a new interview with our esteemed Foreign Minister from today's Sunday Mail:

A most delicate balance

“Unfortunately we are witnessing a Turkey which is increasingly hostile and convinced that the EU needs it a lot more than it needs the union,” she said.

Instead of showing genuine statesmanship, Turkey “is trying to dictate to Europe its own conditions”, said Marcoullis, adding, “We are not alone in thinking that this is unacceptable”.

The foreign ministry is “concerned that Turkey is behaving in a way that is foiling its own declared bid for European membership”, a development that “needs to be reversed”.

The Cypriot diplomat noted that it was to Cyprus and Turkey’s advantage for the latter to become a fully Europeanised country, adhering to EU values and principles.

“This is paramount if Turkey is to play the central role which it aspires to play in this region,” she said.
