"the Turkish side will aim to upgrade the TRNC in such a way as to make reunification impossible."
So after 36 years of actual partition, and 55 years of communal separation, we are being threatened with.....partition.
To go forth in the world and seek recognition of the abortion in the north, it will require setting out its frontiers, and that is not going to happen while Turkey, using the TRNC as a front wants to lay claim to the oil and gas of the south.
Upgrading the north also means upgrading the south. Many countries will seek to act "equitably" and will make their recognition of the TRNC conditional on Turkey recognising the RoC, thereby relinquishing all pretence of acting as guarantor for the whole island and other bullshit it has used to claim dininished sovereignty for RoC.
Turkey is NOT willing to see a fully independent RoC, even post partition. A fully independent RoC, even if it only has 63 per cent of the island, will be free to enter into alliances, and might even consider union with another country, and Turkey will not be able to do FA about it. That is definitely not want they want. So it will be interesting to see what kind of upgrading they will seek for the TRUNK, which will fool the TCs into thinking that they are a nation while keeping tabs on the whole of Cyprus.
