Bassil not concerned over Turkish objections to Lebanese-Cypriot agreement
October 4, 2011
Energy Minister Gebran Bassil said in an interview published on Tuesday that the Turkish objections to the Lebanon-Cyprus maritime borders agreement “will not have any weight.”
“The Turkish objections to the Lebanese-Cypriot treaty do not have any tangible influence because Lebanon does not share maritime borders with Turkey or with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which Lebanon does not recognize,” Bassil told Al-Akhbar newspaper.
Bassil added that “had former Prime Minister Saad Hariri not yielded to the Turkish demands, the oil drilling would have started and Lebanon would not have lost 860 Km2 of maritime land following the Cypriot-Israeli agreement.”
Last week, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told PM Najib Mikati that his country rejects Lebanon’s maritime treaty with Cyprus.
In July, Israel's cabinet approved a map of the Jewish state's proposed maritime borders with Lebanon, which is to be submitted to the United Nations.
Following Israel’s approval of the map, Energy Minister Gebran Bassil countered that Lebanon will not give up its maritime rights. Lebanon and Israel differ on their interpretation of the maritime border.
The Lebanese Parliament in August 2010 passed an oil exploration bill, which calls for the establishment of a treasury and a committee to oversee exploration and drilling off of Lebanon.
