Should MPs boycott the House until Christophias resigns?

Postby CBBB » Tue Oct 04, 2011 7:26 am

I am not sure what constitutes a forum in the House of Representatives, but surely if all the non-AKEL MPs boycotted the House no legislation could be passed and Christophias would have to resign.

Does this make sense?

Yes, that makes sense. But I guess more than 50% need to boycott for this to work.

It is probably similar to a vote of no confidence. Perhaps that could force christofias to resign.

AKEL only has 19 seats out of the 56, so only 34%, but I still can't find out what the required quorum is.

It's called a "motion of no confidence" but 'm not sure what the president’s options are in such a case in the RoC constitution.

According to this:

http://www.cyprus-mail.com/disy/our-viewnot-even-glimmer-hope-if-christofias-stays/20110731

In our system the president is untouchable, as the concept of a ‘no-confidence vote’, which would topple a prime minister in a parliamentary democracy, does not exist.

...there is no avenue for a motion of no confidence to remove the president.

Agreed, but if the house refuses to pass legislation, such as the budget, what choice would Toff have other than to resign?

The MP's shouldn't boycott. Instead they should get a rope and hang him from a tree!

At this point he not only needs to resign, he also should be held accountable for the 13 deaths he is responsible for and the millions in damages he caused.

The house will need to be prepared to take responsibility for the unpaid salaries of public servants and the pensions of little old ladies (to say nothing of missed interest payments to government creditors) if the president digs his heels in.

If the President "digs in" then it is he that should take responsibility for a dysfunctional state.

The Representatives would be giving him a "motion of no confidence", and the inquiry has found that he is culpable, and hence, there is a need for early elections or he should resign.

The best way is to have an early election to let the people decide.

No, it would be the President's responsibility.
