Pity this episode has taken Kyprianou down as well as I always rated him as a successor. God knows who will stand for President now. Are there any credible alternatives?

Yes, the son of the previous, INMHO.

Presumably if he walks, the Vice Pres gets promoted ??????

(BBC report at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-15150755 , must be serious if the sleepy BBC pick up on it so quickly)

Christofias should resign and make arrangements for new elections. If this happens it will be a victory for democracy as the government appointed Poliviou to investigate the case, and his report showed that the president had responsibility.

Although Christofias made huge mistakes, I will maintain a respect for him for allowing a transparent investigation and for resigning after the results of the report. If he does not resign I will lose all respect for him.

If Christofias does not resign it will be a great defeat for democracy in Cyprus and it will create many problems.

This is what worries me now. After the death of Papadopoulos there is nobody of his caliber to take over, at least none of the party leaders.

In terms of abilities Anastasiades is probably ahead of the others, but his party has never demonstrated the ability to take independent decisions for the good of Cyprus. They have always been manipulated by the Americans and if Anastasiades takes over I am afraid that worst things will happen to Cyprus.

I was disgusted when I first heard that the government had the audacity to blame and sack firefighters; the very people who put their lives on the line (losing 6 as a result) to try to save the public from the government’s incompetence!

Anyway, today we seem to have a few choices:

1. The government calls for early elections.
2. The government replaces the president with another party member for the remainder of term, constitution permitting.
3. The vice president takes over as an emergency measure for the remainder of term.
4. The government does nothing risking public confidence and backlash.

I think it’s the attorney general’s job to decide in such a crisis but I could be wrong.

In December there will be the Local elections. I believe the elections for the Local and Presidential elections should be combined. If they can not make it by December then both elections should be held in January.

By the way, since there is no vice-president, if the president resigns right away then the president of the parliament (Omirou) takes over.

Who is the current Vice-President? Constitutionally it would be a TC. Would it then be the President of the House of Representatives? Omirou...?

Edit: I see Piratis answered my question.

Playing the devil’s advocate, does that now make Eroglue president of the RoC?

Does anyone honestly believe the Toffee will resign? He's more like a dictator than a president. He seems to be under the illusion that he is a great man. I would love to see him go, but I honestly believe his claws are well dug in. He has lost what little creditability he had. Hat's off to Mr. Polyviou who has more honor in his little toe than Toffee has in his entire fat little body.
