The problem with Russian support for the RoC is that our (and Israel's) gas is in competition to their own supply to the EU. Unless they are looking to make a major investment in our gas find (if we have one).

There were reports of a year ago that the Russian firm Gazprom would be bidding for blocks in CY waters.

Gas is one of Russia's most and probably their only credible export. I was reading somewhere that Russia is like an international gas cartel.

the EU is very much dependent on Russian gas, but Russia recognizes this as an interdependence as about 70% of gazproms revenue comes from the EU. (I am no expert on this and possibly just talking sh*t)

Russia will definitely want to have a look in and license some of the blocks. Given the relationship Russia has with Cyprus, Cyprus will likely very much welcome a cooperation agreement.

Strange how it's panning out. The way I see it, the EU wanted the Nabucco pipeline which passes through Turkey to reduce its dependence on Russia for its energy needs. Now that Turkey is proving erratic the EU doesn't want to be at the mercy of the Turks who have been using the construction of the Nabucco pipeline to try and increase their leverage with the EU.

The EU now sees Cyprus and Israel as a way of diversifying their energy needs without over-reliance on unstable parties like the Turks and Russians.

The Turks however still need the Nabucco pipeline as a way of increasing their dominance and influence in the region. They do not want Cyprus and Israel undermining their strategic vision of Turkey as the main energy hub in the region. The Turks also want Egypt to ship their gas not through Cyprus and Israel but through Turkey and the Nabucco pipeline. Hence Erdogan's recent visit to Egypt.

Russia sees the Nabucco pipeline as reducing its role as the EU's key energy supplier. But in the long run, Cyprus and Israel are less a threat to Russia's interests in the area than Turkey. So Russia is content to squeeze Turkey by backing Turkey's rivals in the region: Cyprus, Greece and Israel. No doubt Russian energy companies will be keen to invest in Cypriot gas exploration as well.

The Turks are getting squeezed on all sides. Hence their desperate attempts to assert some clout in the region. Interesting times...

The Turks are making demands of Russia along with Ultimatums. Turkey is probably counting on something else to fall back on and ultimatums usually end up backfiring anyway.

Where does that leave Turkey's dream of being the region's key energy player? The Piri Reis had better find some gas quick!

One wonders what's lurking under the surface of this Block 12,... must be getting very crowded.

Btw, someone asked what I thought of a likely Turkey vs Israel confrontation elsewhere so here goes:

Imagine the horror on the Turkish pilot’s face when an attempt to fire at an Israeli jet results in…

“Error: Enemy target not found!”

…across his display!

The fools have been purchasing Israeli and US hardware since the early 90s, yet today they actually think they can fire against their suppliers who HARDCODE their export microprocessors from being used against them!
Erdogan, should ask Musharaff why the US has been able to conduct drone and other aircraft sorties over Pakistani territory, totally undetected and unhindered despite myriads of Pakistani warnings!

The Americans and Israelis can REMOTELY shut down their export military systems as they please, and they also possess the best radar jamming systems that Erdogan seems clueless about. In an aerial confrontation, Turkey’s best bet of “downing” an Israeli jet is to pray for lightning to strike them!

I won’t even bother to mention nuclear power.
