Oh goody, some coverage from Turkish sources of the new proxy CY Airforce defending CY waters...

..."A Turkish seismic research ship which is exploring gas near Cyprus was harassed by two low-flying Israel warplanes and a helicopter on Thursday night, Turkish Vatan daily reported on Friday.

Vatan referred to a story by the Greek Cypriot daily Phileleftheros, which argued that Israel boosted its presence in the Eastern Mediterranean as of Thursday night. The report said the two F-15 jets that took off from Tel Aviv flew through the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot airspaces. The jets reportedly ignored warnings from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) officials and got so close to Turkey's Mediterranean coasts that they could be even seen from Mersin's beaches, the report said. Turkey then reportedly sent two F-16 jets to the area to track the Israeli jets, which then returned to Israel..."

Boomer,

The basis of Turkish growth is zero environmental laws, outrageous export subsidies, to the extent that you can sell at a loss and still profit from the subsidy, and lots more along those lines. Go onto the web page of any Turkish embassy and see what I mean.

Two observations. Such advantages are not allowed under EU rules. If they operated under EU laws they would shut down over half of their industry. Secondly, these practices verge on dumping and at some point they will not be tolerated.

Looking at the products themselves, they are cheap, with correspondingly poor quality, and mostly based on foreign owned, or stolen, technology. So far I have not seen evidence of local innovation.

In short, this kind of growth is not sustainable.

And I am still puzzled at how they can keep posting double digit growth when all their clients are in dire straights. WHo are they selling to? Turkish statistics? Who knows!

The significance of the Israeli jet flights is twofold:

firstly they asked permission from Larnaca to overfly Karpasia. A slap in the face of Ercan and the TRNC.

Secondly they proved to the Turks that their assertions about the space between Greece and Cyprus, south of Kastellorizo, is not acceptable.

It is useful to keep in mind that Israel has an air force which is double the size of Turkey's. Keeping tabs on them can turn out to cost a lot of money.

I think the Turks will move their illegalities in the Aegean from now on because of the Israelis. More trouble for our little sister Greece.

There are reports that Greece and Israel are co-ordinating the response to Turkish threats vis-à-vis oil/gas in the eastern Med in line with a defence pact signed a few weeks ago.

Here's one such report... http://israelinsider.net/profiles/blogs ... -hostile-t

Are there still people out there who think they can “tame” Turkey via EU membership, despite Turkey’s repeated announcements and actions of her intentions in the region?

nikitas with a 70 odd million people population you can do a lot if run properly, especially coming out of proverty...the problem with turkey is tax collection, they are cash economy...if they could fix that they will enjoy good growth rates...

so the answer to your question above what drives this growth,
1...domestic consumption
2...foreign investment
3...hot money to cover credit

if you were to take hot money out, turkey will still enjoy a reasonable growth rate...because local consumption and foreign investment will still be there...

the hot money with the devaluation of the lira is a hot issue right now for turkey...payments on loans are going up by the minute...
