Turkey's EU Minister Accuses Greek Cypriots Of Provoking
Thursday, 29 September 2011
Turkey's European Union (EU) minister and chief negotiator accused on Wednesday the Greek Cypriot administration of provoking and hampering Cyprus negotiations.
Egemen Bagis highlighted importance of his talks in Strasbourg in a period when the Greek Cypriot administration increased its campaign in EU institutions to darken Turkey.
"What the Greek Cypriot administration is doing is a provocation, and it hampers the positive course of comprehensive peace talks," Bagis told Turkish journalists in Strasbourg after meeting executives of the EU.
Bagis underlined timing of his talks in Strasbourg and he would have the opportunity to discuss recent developments.
"We will give a response to Greek Cypriots' darkening campaign and efforts to show Turkey as a problem, in the right place and at the right time," Bagis said.
Bagis said what Turkey was doing was a response to Greek Cypriots' steps.
Referring to his meeting with EU representatives this morning, Bagis said he believed he could convince European commissioner to take positive steps regarding visa procedures.
"We hope they will make some remarks on eliminating visa problem of Turkish citizens visiting Schengen member states and on providing some facilities," Bagis said.
Bagis said he would have the opportunity to discuss Turkey's full membership negotiations and reform process with European executives.
"I also had the opportunity to talk about Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's recent visits to Somalia, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia in order to show them developments in Turkey and Turkey's influence and role in the region so that the progress report can be objective," he said.
Bagis said a historic agreement to be signed at the European Parliament today would enable eight Turkish citizens to work at the European Commission, which was important for indicating that Turkey was an indispensable part of the EU.
Turkey's EU Minister Egemen Bagis has met European Commissioner for enlargement Stefan Fule and Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malstrom in Strasbourg.
European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs Chair Gabriele Albertini, Co-president of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee Helene Flautre, Socialist Group Chairman Martin Schultz and Greens Group Co-chairs Rebecca Harms and Daniel Cohn Bendit were the other officials Bagis held meetings at EP.
Bagis will also meet vice-president & commissioner for inter-institutional relations Maros Sefcovic and sign a memorandum of understanding on assignment of Turkish experts in European Commission.
He will then deliver a speech at a meeting on Turkey-EU visa relations.
Following his meeting with Turkey rapporteur Ria Oomen-Ruijten, Bagis will attend a gathering which will be hosted by Turkish businessmen associations in France.

as lieberman said, these clowns, if they had any brains they should be demanding pay for the comedy act... ...as if turkey needs any help in darkening herself...
