Turkey's EU Minister Accuses Greek Cypriots Of Provoking

Thursday, 29 September 2011

Turkey's European Union (EU) minister and chief negotiator accused on Wednesday the Greek Cypriot administration of provoking and hampering Cyprus negotiations.
Egemen Bagis highlighted importance of his talks in Strasbourg in a period when the Greek Cypriot administration increased its campaign in EU institutions to darken Turkey.
"What the Greek Cypriot administration is doing is a provocation, and it hampers the positive course of comprehensive peace talks," Bagis told Turkish journalists in Strasbourg after meeting executives of the EU.
Bagis underlined timing of his talks in Strasbourg and he would have the opportunity to discuss recent developments.
"We will give a response to Greek Cypriots' darkening campaign and efforts to show Turkey as a problem, in the right place and at the right time," Bagis said.
Bagis said what Turkey was doing was a response to Greek Cypriots' steps.
Referring to his meeting with EU representatives this morning, Bagis said he believed he could convince European commissioner to take positive steps regarding visa procedures.
"We hope they will make some remarks on eliminating visa problem of Turkish citizens visiting Schengen member states and on providing some facilities," Bagis said.
Bagis said he would have the opportunity to discuss Turkey's full membership negotiations and reform process with European executives.
"I also had the opportunity to talk about Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's recent visits to Somalia, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia in order to show them developments in Turkey and Turkey's influence and role in the region so that the progress report can be objective," he said.
Bagis said a historic agreement to be signed at the European Parliament today would enable eight Turkish citizens to work at the European Commission, which was important for indicating that Turkey was an indispensable part of the EU.
Turkey's EU Minister Egemen Bagis has met European Commissioner for enlargement Stefan Fule and Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malstrom in Strasbourg.
European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs Chair Gabriele Albertini, Co-president of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee Helene Flautre, Socialist Group Chairman Martin Schultz and Greens Group Co-chairs Rebecca Harms and Daniel Cohn Bendit were the other officials Bagis held meetings at EP.
Bagis will also meet vice-president & commissioner for inter-institutional relations Maros Sefcovic and sign a memorandum of understanding on assignment of Turkish experts in European Commission.
He will then deliver a speech at a meeting on Turkey-EU visa relations.
Following his meeting with Turkey rapporteur Ria Oomen-Ruijten, Bagis will attend a gathering which will be hosted by Turkish businessmen associations in France.

Let me get this straight- Cyprus carrying out a diplomatic campaign within the EU justifies the encirclement of Cyprus with warships. This is what I gather from Bagis quoted statements.

AH yes, and Turkey has made contacts in Somalia, wow! Does this mean less or more piracy of EU owned ships?

What still amazes me about all this utter bollocks that Turkey is still spouting, that not a single turk/TC/turkish mouth piece (and we know who they are) have come to turkeys defence.

Again, I say, the silence is deafening. :) :) :)

Would some one please list all the vioations that turkey has against Cyprus and pose the question to the international community, 'what about these provocations',

Thanks

Boomerang,

What appeared in Kathimerini's Sunday edition was a statement by the head of the US Jewish organizations that an attack on the Noble platform which is a US registered ship, will be tantamount to an attack on US soil.

Yesterday on a newsblog, cannot recall which now, there was an unconfirmed report that Israel has agreed to provide air defence for Cyprus.

Today, Thursday, Mihalis Ignatiou, the Cypriot correspondent for Mega channel and Ethnos newspaper in Washington, had an interesting report about Erdo. Here is part of it:

"Ο τρόπος με τον οποίο αλλάζει αποφάσεις, φιλίες και συμμαχίες είναι χαρακτηριστικός σχιζοφρενούς ατόμου ή ατόμου που κυριαρχείται από θρησκευτικό φανατισμό. Ο Ταγίπ Ερντογάν φαίνεται πως... πάσχει και από τα δύο."

For non Greek speakers, Ignatiou reports on the ease with which Erdo buys and dumps friends like Mubarak, ,Kadafi, Assad and the president of the Sudan. He also mentions that the former US ambassador to Ankara, who had become something of a Turkish lobbyist in the US, recently stated that the US must make clear to Turkey that in the event of a clash, it will support Israel. As Ignatiou notes, the fact that a pro Turkish former diplomat felt he had to make this statement is indicative of the suspicion with which the Americans regard Erdogan. The quote above says:

The way he changes decisions, friendships, alliances is characteristic of a schizophrenic or someone possessed by religious fanaticism. Erdoghan seems to suffer from both".

I will add that his demeanour during his recent Cyprus visit was clearly way out. He displayed open racism towards GCs at a time of intense peace talks, arrogance over sensitive issues like Famagusta, and sabotaged the talks by precluding any territorial adjustments. He displays the cunning of the schizo, a view reinforced by his recent statements about Turkey projecting power in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. The other shocker was the thuggish behavior of his entourage at the UN. The guy is far flung. I wonder if he has some kind of substance problem.

There were reports of 2 Israeli Jets flying over the Karpas Peninsula and then flying the entire northern breadth of the RoC and Ankara FIR boundary. Apparently, the Turks tried to contact the Israeli aircraft but the Israelis ignored the radio communications from the illegal Ercan Airport.

I have no idea how these reports come about.

Let's just hope Turkey keeps behaving the way it is for many years to come.

I think in time, Israel will want to have a base in Cyprus, as well as a base on one of the Greek islands, perhaps Crete, in order to allow her to maintain air superiority in the region, teamed up with Greece. Should Cyprus be officially partitioned, the UK bases will be closed and the Israelis moved in along with Greece, to protect their and EU's interests with the Oil & Gas in the region. That would be Erdogan's worst nightmare.

I'm not sure about Greece, as I don't want Turkey in Cyprus either! Both these bitches can get lost.

But there is a new alliance brewing, an axis if you like, between Israel, Cyprus and Greece, and I agree that the RoC should sign an agreement with Israel and allow them to permanently station jets in Cyprus. Paphos would be ideal. Also, Greek jets are currently in Israel on exercise.

I have been reading a bit about violations within the Athens FIR. Perhaps Nikitas can explain what the difference is between FIR and national airspace. I think I should stick to boats quite frankly.

I don't believe Cyprus will be 'officially' partitioned. Such a thing can never occur without the RoC's signature, and I don't think that will ever be forthcoming.

A change in the balance is already afoot.
