Turkish UAV Predator in the Aegean! - Agreed to sell the U.S.

The U.S. refused to rent but agreed to sell the UAV Predator Turkey in an effort to "sweeten" Ankara from the political and diplomatic isolation which has fallen due to the aggressive stance of the Cypriot drilling. At the same time offer "counterweight" to "entrapment" of Israeli construction UAV Heron, even though the delivery of Predator is not immediate, but will require a minimum period of one year.

However, the inclusion of the Predator in the Turkish arsenal is not only something for the PKK, but the Greek security. The Predator is the premier UAV in service and has the ability to carry and launch missiles AGM-114 Helfire, a feature that had the Heron.

In the environment of the Aegean, the Predator can be fatal "player", especially if combined with Hellfire.

The agreement is of course "in principle" and to complete as it should be approved by the committees of Congress and by the same Congress, dominated by the Israeli lobby.

Speaking to reporters yesterday at the General Assembly, Mr Erdogan said Turkey has offered to buy or lease these aircraft and examine the details of the proposal. Turkish officials believe that the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has exploited the lack of UAV and has intensified his attacks.

The UAV predator, as most UAVs is effective when it operates unopposed. It is a slow drone, with limited firepower. It is effective on pinpoint strikes on soft targets. Against a modern jet it is doomed.

THe problem of the Turks in the Aegean is that each and every one of hundreds of Greek islands is potential base for land borne antiship and antiaircraft systems. It is also a hiding place for missile boats which can shelter in the radar blind side of land masses. No matter what they do this will not change. The daily violations are meant to test the reactions and reveal possible defences. But the the other side are not total dummies to reveal their hand.

In any case, the game is shifting from the Aegean to the Libyan and Ionian seas and there the Turks have no possible claims. The liklihood is that oil is there, and within the 6 mile limit or on land. The Aegean has not shown oil bearing potential. It is a quirk of geology.

These drones are expected to be delivered in June of 2012 and that the two countries were still settling the details regarding the use of these drones. And as the article states ... it needs to be approved by the Congress and that's probably not going to occur because many congressman are concerned and do not trust the neo-Ottoman power brokers.
