Cypriot among CERN scientists who discover neutrinos speed

A Cypriot scientist has participated in the team of researchers of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), who have discovered that subatomic particles move faster than the speed of light.

Markos Drakos, the Cypriot scientist who took part in the CERN experiment told CNA that for three years his team has been doing measurements to reduce any statistical error.

“Now we are certain for the result. Of course we can never be absolutely sure, but we are waiting to be confirmed or not by another experiment'', he said.

The official announcement that neutrinos seem to break the barrier of the speed of light was made Friday by scientists working on the OPERA experiment.

According to the experiment, subatomic particles have gone faster than the speed of light, thus questioning the theory of relativity, of Albert Einstein, that nothing can travel faster than light, which has a speed of 299,792,458 metres per second.

The researchers noticed that the particles showed up 60 billionths of a second earlier than they would have done if they had travelled at the speed of light. The Opera result is based on the observation of over 15000 neutrino events measured at Gran Sasso, and appears to indicate that the neutrinos travel at a velocity 20 parts per million above the speed of light, nature’s cosmic speed limit.

Drakos, who works at CERN since 1985, told CNA that they expect other scientists to question or debate their measurements.

Asked if their findings question Einstein’s theory of relativity, Drakos explained that according to that theory no particle travels faster than the speed of light.

''But we found out that neutrinos do travel faster. This, though, doesn't mean that Einstein’s theory is wrong'', he added, noting that there are other particles which behave according to Einstein's theory.

The Cypriot scientist underlined that their findings could pave the way for new theories. The first application, he said, would be to understand how the universe was created and how it evolves.

The Opera experiment was inaugurated in 2006, with the main goal of studying the rare transformation (oscillation) of muon neutrinos into tau neutrinos.

The lemmings say this is not possible.

They must have him confused with someone else.
No 'tiny island' in the middle East is capable of producing internationally heralded scientists.

Out of the question.
Christopher Pissarides is a myth.
There must be some kind of conspiracy.

Yep, just like it must be another myth, the development of the internationally acclaimed "Non-Invasive Pre-Natal Diagnosis of Down Syndrome" by the Cyprus Institue of Genetics and Neurology.

Maybe I should try to cooperate with them. Smart WMDs is the future of the weapon industry. 8)

Yes but he has been mislead by Chief Scientists on his cabinet claiming that explosives are safe to be kept in residential areas.. We are a nation of scientists.
