Lit,

Great post, thanks for the map and the quoted report.

Those who extol the Annan plan, should look at the map, and cross reference the claims reported on plots 01 and 02.

Those two plots under the Annan plan would have been granted as EEZ to the British Sovereign Base areas. In other words the former colonial power would have taken, without any contribution or payment, a sizeable portion of the natural wealth of the island.

Apparently the Turks are basing their claim on the lines of the Annan plan, since under it those plots would have been taken from Cyprus.

Well, those of us who proposed the creation of an effective military, not a symbolic one, back in the 70, were and are maligned as non realists. The realists apparently are satisfied with the status of the poutana of the eastern med.

Ankara is sticking to its oil and gas exploration activities as planned in eastern Mediterranean Sea despite continued unease voiced by its old allies, the U.S. and the EU.

At the moment, Turkish geophysical and seismic research vessel Piri Reis is surveying in and around the Block 12 economic zone, where Greek Cypriot drilling is also under way. The Piri Reis is expected to continue to search the area as long as needed, a senior Foreign Ministry official told the Hürriyet Daily News on Wednesday. The ship, however, will not approach the spot where Noble Energy has erected a rig, the official said.

In the earlier talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made known the U.S.’s position on Greek Cyprus’ energy exploration projects, a senior U.S. official said on condition of anonymity. Washington “supports [Greek] Cyprus’s right to explore for energy” and “doesn’t believe that should undermine or interfere with the talks” to resolve the Cyprus problem, the official said. The first warnings to Turkey came from EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who urged Turkey to refrain from any kind of threat against Greek Cyprus after Turkey had said it would launch its own oil and gas exploration effort.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized Ankara's determination to enforce its will when he attended the induction of Turkey's first domestically built warship, a 300-foot corvette Heybeliada, into the navy Thursday.

He pointedly noted that the ceremony took place on the 473rd anniversary of the Battle of Preveza in northwestern Greece, where an Ottoman fleet destroyed a large Christian force.

"I recommend the international community take the necessary lessons from the Preveza victory," Erdogan declared.

the guy is declaring war on the international community. high time this spawn of satan was given the bitch-slapping he so thoroughly deserves. this is wot decades of appeasement by the west has created.

Battle of Preveza
In 1537, commanding a large Ottoman fleet, Hayreddin Barbarossa captured a number of Aegean and Ionian islands belonging to the Republic of Venice, namely Syros, Aegina, Ios, Paros, Tinos, Karpathos, Kasos and Naxos, thus annexing the Duchy of Naxos to the Ottoman Empire. He then besieged the Venetian stronghold of Corfu and ravaged the Spanish-held Calabrian coast in southern Italy.

Incredible. Has Erdogan lost all contact with reality? Looks like he's descended into some kind of neo-Ottoman lunacy where he thinks he's going to take on the West at the head of an Islamic army. Is the guy serious? Or just playing out some weird fantasy? Looks like we've another mad Islamic autocrat asking to be taken down. Are the Turks daft enough to follow him? I hope the West and Nato are paying attention to this man's ravings. I really do.
