EU Citizen: How much money to move to Cyprus???

Postby a_8 » Tue Sep 20, 2011 3:25 pm

Hello,

I am an EU citizen and thinking of moving to Cyprus as a self sufficient individual (I would not be seeking employment and I would not be registering as self-employed). I will have private health insurance.

My question is: Does anyone know what guidelines the immigration police would require to prove that I am self-sufficient?

Is a minimum amount of money in a Cyprus bank account required?

Will they accept accounts held outside Cyprus?

Is some form of regular income from outside Cyprus needed, or are savings in and of themselves enough?

Regards,

there are no restrictions for EU citizens

you can move as much money as you want

it would be a good move if you moved a siezable amount since we have quite high interest rates for deposits right now. government guarantees 100k against bank defaults, but since the russians have billions upon billions sitting in Cypriot banks, i'm sure that the risk of default is pretty close to... 0

actually, let me put it this way... foreign capital held by CY banks is in the multitudes of the entire country's economy

there

I am afraid there has been a misunderstanding of my question. According to EU regulations, EU citizens have the right to live and work in other EU member states.

If a person is taking a job, the registration process for EU citizens is quite simple and straightforward. If a person is not taking a job or going to be self employed, that person has to demonstrate to the host country that the have private health insurance and sufficient funds so that they will not become a burden on the social security system of the host country. And to do this, most countries want to see bank statements, etc.

So, my questions are:

Does anyone know what guidelines the immigration police in Cyprus follow in assessing self-sufficiency?

Do the immigration police require a minimum amount of money in Cyprus bank account?

Will they accept accounts held outside Cyprus?

Is some form of regular income from outside Cyprus needed, or are savings in an of themselves enough?

To live here, you do not need minimum income or funds; however, to get a 'Yellow Slip' -previously 'Pink Slip' or Alien Card, you make an appointment at Immigration (currently 2 months wait in Paphos) take your passport + copy, evidence of health care (private or Form S1 if you are British citizen) evidence of income and bank statements, rental agreement or evidence of property purchase.

As to 'how much', levels of funds required are quite low providing you have an income, say GB£10,000pa. Yes, they will take into account funds in overseas accounts.

You can try calling Immigration for a definitive answer.

Is this what you are talking about? I got it from the government's website, but I think it's very very old. So it's the best if you check with the office. There's a number somewhere on that page.

Thanks for everyone's replies.

I had stumbled upon that link and like you said Cpjay, it is very old.

I will try to call the Immigration Department and see if they can offer any guidelines.

Still, if anyone else has any first hand knowledge/experience in this matter, please do post it!

Thanks,

When I arrived here in 1975 I had £45 sterling and a car with my belongings in it (it was a hatchback), oh and the wife. I am still here.

I made the wrong choice, it was the car!
