North & South car hire query

Postby Colonel White » Thu Sep 15, 2011 11:31 am

Will be coming to North Cyprus August next year and hiring a car there (all booked now though), and wanted to drive to the south to re-visit some old haunts but i have read on a website that you can hire a car in the south and take it north but not drive south if hiring in the north. Is that correct as the travel agent says you can't do it either way. Can't see why as almost all check points allow vehicular movement. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge? I don't want the hassle and extra expense of hiring two cars and paying twice.

You are travelling to an illegal occupied state and you are asking about the legalities of car hire, jesussssss.

There is no 'North' cyprus just Cyprus or the occupied area, you will be staying amongst the illegals, fugitives, british corrks and carpet baggers. Good luck, you're going to need it.

If you read my original post i was not asking about the legalities of car hire, just whether i can drive from Cyprus to the occupied area and vice-versa, as there is conflicting evidence on the subject.

So given that this is supposed to be a friendly non-political forum for all that have an interest in Cyprus, (which i and my wife do), i thought i'd seek some practical advice from those more informed or more experienced.

I'm not particularly interested in getting involved in the political side of things as i'm not as qualified as most people on here, but that said, i do have opinions and i can assure these do lie with Cyprus and not the occupied area.

What are British corrks anyway? I haven't got a clue as i'm actually English?

Your original post stated that you were intending to stay in the occupied area and planning to travel south to the government-controlled (free) areas of Cyprus. If that is the case then you will presumably be arriving in Turkish-occupied Cyprus through an illegal port of entry. You will also be presumably staying, while in the occupied area, on land or property that was expropriated from a Greek Cypriot who was forcibly expelled from their home.

The very act of residing in the occupied area is an insensitive one at best and a calculated political one at worst. There is no disinterested stay in an area under military occupation in which the area's original residents are, under force of arms, unable to reclaim homes they were ethnically cleansed from.

Don't mistake someone pointing out the implications of a stay in the occupied areas as shrill politicising. Staying in the occupied areas is a moral choice. If you want to visit "old haunts" in the southern part of Cyprus there is nothing stopping you from first arriving and staying in the free areas of the south. This would be the legal, sensitive and morally right thing to do. Bear in mind that you can visit the occupied territory of Cyprus quite easily from the south if you so wish. The choice is, of course, ultimately yours.

I think B25 means British Crooks, where the commonly held view (IMHO quite rightly) is that all of the Brits in the occupied zone who sold and/or bought in /live in /stay in property that pre 74 was (and legally remains) owned by Kypreos who were displaced by the invasion are dealing in/benefiting from stolen property. The politics is still very strong here and what you should appreciate is that in many sections of the Kypreos community we British are held at least partly to to blame for the state affairs Cyprus now finds itself in, for our duplicitous dealings with Cyprus through out the 30's. 30. and 50's (in the Colonial days) and beyond, including in conniving at the events of 1974, and particular opprobrium is reserved those in the occupied zone who are seen as profiting out the invasion.

I must admit that even being English I can see that British self interest was heavily at work in the colonial/pre-independence era but I don't think the Brits were heavily involved in the summer of 74 Harold Wislon (sic) and his foreign sec "sunny" Jim Callaghan, were probably rather too busy with domestic issues to give a rat's arse about Cyprus. Now those damned Yankees and their involvement is a probably different matter.

Good luckin your hire car. You may need it. A lot may depend on what happens off the coast in the next few days.

Thank you STUD and Hermes, for putting it so much better than I ever could, I think he gets the picture.

The 'I don't do politics' excuse is no excuse for all the reasons pointed put above. Some people have morals some don't but thanks anyway, enjoy your stay in the property of an ethnically cleansed GC.

Colonel white you put your foot in it good and proper. Why come on to a forum like this where nearly every greek hates every turk and every turk on this forum hates every greek apart from me as I actually have a brain cell. Never ask for advice about the north to a greek because they will only tell you obscured and politicall answers. Me and my English mate who visited the north from the south on numerous occasions and on one occasion I asked a local greek the direction to the crossing through Nicosia.the response was don't go to that side they are bad people and they will cut your head off . I sarcastically told him well our heads are still on our shoulders and my auntie has not tried to cut my head off. If your going there to enjoy like I do ignore all the bull shit propoganda . You have come into a world of hate and I suggest you leave this forum before it puts you off going. If you want less headache you are better off travelling via south first because as you can see there is a lot of hatred so there will be obstacles so use the politics for your own personal gains. Read the small print when you even hire from the south in case you can't take the car over or just check before you book . Don't get involved in politics just stay neutral because both groups believe their opinions to be without a doubt the truth and the other group to be evil. Both communities were displaced due to 1974 so don't get sympathetic to one group over the other. Majority of kyrenia was inhabited by GC s prior to 1974 and larnaca was inhabited by TCs . Both sides lost family and friends and inflicted atrocities . If you look at it from a birds eye view like I do when I visit then you can enjoy both sides. Best to leave your opinions in the uk like I do and pick them up when you return. Hope my insight helps or are you there already oops too late sorry.
