Professor Foskolos in an interview with Kriti TV, you can search it on youtube, has said that the oil reserves in the south of Crete, inside Greek territorial waters, not in the EEZ, are likely to dwarf all other reserves in the Mediterranean. He has worked in oil exploration and is a high ranking member of international oil and gas organizations.
As for the Ionian, there are known oil wells in the island of Zakynthos and the western Peloponnese. It would be ironic in many ways, if oil is found in these areas where there can be no dispute of their ownership and they are so close to the final markets via Italy and its national grid of pipelines.
But always expect a malakas to make a token appearance even in these areas. Remember how Tansu Ciller had claimed that Greece cannot unilaterally extend its territorial waters in the Ionian without Turkish permission? She got a reply from the USA then, something that included the word "silly" in it.
