I am from the U.S., and planning a move to Europe, and am trying to decide where would be the best fit. I am 40 years old, with 1 child and 1 on the way, so I want to settle in a country that is family-friendly. My wife is Russian (though a U.S. citizen) and got me thinking about Cyprus.

In looking at the Cyprus govt website, it would appear we would go under the category F visa, as I have a U.S. government pension that would probably total around 3500 Euros a month. I also will want to work over the Internet for clients in the U.S., which should provide a decent income in addition to the base. Does this sound like a reasonable option? My wife is a housewife, so I need to make all the money :-)

Anyway, I am planning a 2-week trip in April to check things out. My children I would want to put in Greek schools, as the whole purpose of this endeavor is to get my children fluent in as many languages as possible, in addition to living in a good place with access to much of the culture and history that fascinates me.

By the way, is Cypriot Greek completely understandable, and vice versa, with Greek Greek?

Also, what are the better areas to live that may be more relaxed and cheaper? I do not usually like the most crowded places for living--though do not like the "sticks" either. I would want to find a place that I could have the biggest house that I could get either built or acquired almost new.

Finally, in the long run, in coming under the F visa, is citizenship an option after 5 years? There does not seem to be anything against it from the government regulations, but as always I know that people that have been through this sort of thing are the best to ask.

In advance, I thank you for your time and wisdom.

Diablogun, I'm a semi-Cypiot who lives in the UK. I'm visiting Cyprus next week (as a tourist, the Turks nicked our house). I've been looking to buy for a couple of years now and whilst I do not want to say anything to put you off buying, be very careful. Make sure you get proper independent advice. I very nearly bought a new apartment near Larnaca and knowing what I know now I'm glad the deal did not go through. Personally I would only buy a resale property that has been standing for a few years but I'm sure there are many well built new ones on the market - the problem is unless you have a cousin in the business you may get stitched up.

This chap is an expert on buying in Cyprus and he will take questions on his website.

Jerry,

I think you offer sound advice; it is difficult enough for one to know how the property market works here in the states, and to try to avoid getting ripped off. I would imagine dealing in another culture complicates matters considerably. I will buy that guy's guide when the time comes, and it is an interesting site.

There are 3 levels of schools: elementary (6 years), Gymnasium (3 years), Lyceum (3 years). Only relatively big villages have an elementary school, very few have a gymnasium, and only a few big ones have a Lyceum ... and these biggest ones are not exactly picturesque, not any better than a city. You can find a list of schools here (in Greek) http://www.schools.ac.cy/. One nice village that has elementary and gymnasium (but not lyceum) is Omodos, but it is quite far from Limassol, about 35 minutes drive. An alternative would be villages close to the city that have only elementary school, such as Pareklishia, Pyrgos and Agios Tychonas. If you only care for elementary school and you don't mind being further from the city then Trimiklini, Pissouri, Agros, Platres and Kalo Chorio would be good options. (all these villages should have ADSL)

Thanks Sotos! You have given me a bunch of great information :D I will go through all of these places when I come; I think the wife would like the Limassol area, and these drive times are not bad, especially because I will not have to commute, but simply got shopping on occasion.

The souni and souni pine forest area should be perfect for you. It feels like living in a very rural community, but downtown limassol is only a 15min drive and you're very close to modern city amenities. Anything further than that you're getting a bit too far from civilization

Alternatively, Pyrgos, Pareklisia, Moutagiaka, Agios tychonas, even Moni are almost all part of the city and also give off this suburb kind of feeling you may be looking for.

Look also at Akrunda, Phinikaria, Mathekoloni, Spitali, Fassoula, Palodhia and possibly even Apsiou or Gerasa, all to the north of Limassol. more rural but within about 15mins of the town - possibly a bit more for Apsiou or Gerasa.

Do however be careful - buying a re-sale is a better bet but always make sure there are deeds already issued. Had a problem with buying one 20 yo house that had no deeds not because of any developer's Mortgage but becuase not compliant with the building permit, so we binned the deal.

What is this problem with deeds? The deeds for my land say that it has an illegal construction on it, I have been living in it for 35 years!

If you want to see the illegal construction it will be featured on RIK1 at 19:10.

BTW has anybody explained about driving here? It is not meant to be contact sport but....

No the streing wheel is not on the wrong side....We drive on the correct side of the road, not like you yankees who drive on the right....
use of Rear view mirrors and turn indicators are optional......
yes that may well have a been a 13 yo driving daddie's Porsche to the periptero (small shop) to buy booze and ciggies..... -
what white stop line....?
Filter lane to turn right only ? No I'll just drive down it, and turn left across the face traffic going straight on...
Red traffic light - go with extreme caution
Green traffic light - go with even more extreme caution, see above.
keep to the left lane on the highway unless over-taking? No, lets keep to the right..
....then there is is plenty of room to "undertake" on the left
what? There is a law against using a mobile 'phone while driving?
what? that sign saying "50" is maximum speed in town, not minimum?
Are you sure a five year old is meant to sit in a proper child seat in the back? The kid gets so much more of a view sitting onthe driver's lap and he is lot better than an airbag at protecting the steering wheel from damage,,,,(yes I have seen the Ghalanos wine van being driven like that,,,)!
"I am Britsh (or Russian) so I can drink as much as a I f*cking well like and drive home... sh*t I am too pissed to walk and too f*cking mean to take a cab...... despite being a millionaire... "
To be fair the majority of drivers are OK but there are some real "Malaccas" out their
