moving to Cyprus

Postby sairah » Fri Sep 09, 2011 5:56 pm

Hi there,

I am relatively new to this blog, and had a few questions.

I am probably moving to Cyprus, in a couple months time, along with my husband. I have a German Nationality, however i am currently living in the UK. My husband is looking to enter Cyprus on a student visa. As we both are looking to study and both work here in Cyprus. The thing is I need to find out, if we can claim benefits when we first arrive here, because we wont be able to support ourselves purly on studying. After doing some research it looks, like my husband who has a Pakistani Passport, will also need to apply for a work permit or something like that if he want's to work here as well.

I am not too sure about what rules will apply to myself.

please guys if you kindly could give me some advice.

thank you so much
your help will be appreciated.

Hello there,
Cyprus is not like the UK or Germany, you can't just rock up and claim benefits, as a EU national you would have to work at least a year before you can claim a penny and this money will only come to you 8-10 weeks after that.Social security Benefits are calculated for your previous year of work and is dependent on how much you have paid into the system the year before. There is no housing benefit in Cyprus and the cash you get is not really enough to live on.
Your Husband is a very different matter as a non EU national he would have to attend a private college to study (they are not cheap) just to get a student visa ( the fact that he is married to a german helps but these days it is not a ticket for entry into Cyprus!! ) as a student he would be eligible to work a maximum of 20 hours per week. I have many friends that are married to none EU nationals and the permission to stay and work permit red tape can take up to 6 months to work out so he would not be eligible for any benefits for maybe 18 months after arrival if at all, sorry to be the bringer of bad news.
Wish you luck Jay x

If you are a German citizen then you can come to Cyprus and your husband can come with you and both of you can work here after doing some paperwork. But don't expect any benefits.

If you can't support yourself then stay where you are! Work to earn some money like most normal people. This is not a welfare state and I honestly don't believe I should have to support you or your husband! Get a job, make some money, then go study!

Why do you think you are entitled to hand out?????
