Cyprus Assures Turkish Cypriots They Will Benefit From Oil Exploration

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has assured the Turkish Cypriots that they will also benefit from any wealth the country may gain from oil exploration, which has begun off Cyprus’ southeastern coast.

“Even if there is no political settlement to reunite the country – if Turkey does not show good will – and we do have an income from oil exploitation, we will use it for the common good of both communities,” the President said in statements after a meeting in New York with Greek Foreign Minister Stavros Lambrinides.

Did he say how T/Cs will benefit from any gas income without a solution?

He did not go into specifics. From Reuters:

"My message to Turkey and to the Turkish Cypriots is to find a solution as soon as possible, but as President I guarantee that even before a solution ...that if we have revenue, we will see in which way we can use the revenues for the benefit of the two communities. That must be very clear," Christofias said, according to an official statement.

His comments marked a softening of the stance adopted by Cyprus's Greek Cypriot government, which represents the island internationally. Until now, authorities had said Turkish Cypriots would reap benefits from any gas discovery only after there was a deal on the island, split by war in 1974.

More Cyprus gas exploration maybe in a year-President

NEW YORK, Sept 22 | Fri Sep 23, 2011 12:15am EDT

(Reuters) - Cypriot President Demetris Christofias said on Thursday the east Mediterranean island nation could open up more gas exploration drilling within a year, a move that likely further antagonizes rival Turkey.

"This is the plan. The plan is to open new (exploration blocks). We have only one now," Christofias told Reuters after speaking to the Cypriot community at New York University.

"I could not assure you when exactly," he said, adding when pressed that it could occur in the next 12 months.

"Maybe before. I don't exclude this," he said.

The Δίκωμο Hillbilly

Come and listen to a story about Comrade Demitris
A poor horkato refugee, barely kept his Country fed,
Then one day some containers blew up at Florakis,
And up through the ground came a bubblin' crude.

Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.

Well the first thing you know Kypraioi are millionaires,
So Erdogan said Demitris move away from there
Said drillin' for gas and oil is only for me
So he sent the Turkish Navy to make Mahalebi.

Is the correct answer. Congratulations to the 10 bright sparks who guessed correctly. I went for the fourth option. That shows you how much I know.

Has the fat lady sung? The real fun might only start later, e.g. if gas is found when exploitation drilling begins.

I think she's finished her tune, gone to her dressing room, had a shower and is out having supper.

If the Turks were going to interfere they'd do it at this stage. Not when everything starts to move up a gear and billions of pounds of investment and contracts are at stake. It's clear the Turks have been seriously warned off by all the major players. It's looking promising so far...

An attack on the rig drilling for gas off shore from Cyprus for an Israeli-American consortium would be considered an attack on the United States, says Richard Stone, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
